Symptom
CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM or
Combo drive cannot read a
disc or takes too long to start.
Recording audio CDs is difficult
or impossible.
Problem
CD has been inserted
incorrectly.
The DVD-ROM drive
takes longer to start
because it has to
determine the type of
media being played,
such as audio or video.
CD or DVD disc is dirty. Clean CD or DVD with a CD cleaning kit,
Windows is not
detecting CD-ROM or
DVD-ROM driver.
Wrong or poor quality
media type.
Solution
Reinsert the CD with the label facing outward.
Wait at least 30 seconds to let the DVD-ROM
drive determine the type of media being played.

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to
Settings, and then click Control Panel. The
Control Panel window is displayed.
2. Double-click the System icon. The System
Properties dialog box is displayed.
3. Click the Device Manager tab.
4. Click the plus sign next to the CD or DVD
drive, and select the installed driver.
5. Click the Remove button, and click OK twice.
6. Restart your computer, and let Windows
detect the CD or DVD driver.

widely between manufacturers.
