Power Management

Power management settings conserve power by shutting down
components, initiating Suspend, or initiating Hibernation after a
specified period of inactivity called a timeout.

Initiating Suspend

Suspend turns off power to system components when they are not
being used. While operating on battery power, the system
automatically initiates Suspend after a specified timeout, the
factory-default is five minutes. (You can change the Suspend
timeout on the Battery Conservation Settings tab in Power
Properties.) Suspend is also automatically initiated by a critical
low-battery condition if Hibernation has been turned off.
Suspend does not automatically initiate when the Infrared
NOTE:
Monitor utility in Windows 95 is searching for an infrared device
(see "Infrared Software" in Chapter 9), or when a CD-ROM drive
is in the system and CD-ROM Auto Insert Notification is enabled
(see "Battery Conservation Settings Tab" later in this chapter).
You can manually initiate Suspend by pressing the Suspend
button or by clicking StartÆSuspend. (In Windows 95, the option
to show Suspend on the Start menu is on the Power tab in Power
Properties.)
When Suspend is initiated, the screen blanks, the system beeps
twice, and the power/suspend light begins blinking slowly.
Information remains in system memory until you exit Suspend.
With a fully charged battery pack, the computer can be left in
Suspend for up to a week. However, if you will not be using the
computer for long periods, it is best to save your work before
Suspend is initiated.
Exit Suspend by pressing the suspend button or by sliding the
power switch. The system beeps once, the power/suspend light
stops blinking, and your information returns to the screen at the
point where Suspend was initiated.
IMPORTANT:
low-battery condition. If the power/suspend light and the battery
light are both blinking, resolve the low-battery condition and then
exit Suspend.
