The discretion offered by the Accu-Chek Combo system will let you stay in control while your pump stays out of sight. This Handbook is provided as part of your training on your new Accu-Chek Combo system.

    Preparation and start-up 2 Preparation and start-up 2.1 Filling the cartridge Prepare the materials: · an insulin vial at room temperature · an Accu-Chek Spirit 3.15 ml cartridge system · a disinfectant solution or tissue Wash your hands. Unpack the cartridge system.
  • Page 16 Clean the rubber membrane of the insulin vial with a disinfectant wipe. Pull the plunger of the cartridge back until you feel some resistance. Push the cartridge onto the insulin vial until it snaps into place. Press the plunger to its stop-point and hold it in this position.
  • Page 17 Preparation and start-up Slowly turn the complete system upside down, carefully holding all components in place. Slowly release the plunger to let the insulin flow into the cartridge. If the cartridge is not filled completely pull the plunger gently to draw more insulin.
  • Page 18 Remove the filling aid while turning it anti-clock- wise and pulling at the same time. For storage, push the protective cap onto the cartridge tip until it clicks. The plunger and the filling aid can be disposed (check local regulations for any specific sharps disposal instructions in your area).

    2.3 Inserting an infusion set: Example Accu-Chek FlexLink Examples of recommended infusion sites recommended possible Choose a site away from the waistline, bones, scar tissue, belly button and recent infusion sites.
  • Page 21 Preparation and start-up Before unpacking your infusion set, wash your hands thoroughly. Disinfect the infusion site according to the instructions of your healthcare professional. Remove both pieces of the adhesive backing paper from the self-adhesive. Turn and pull to remove the transparent protective cover and expose the introducer needle and cannula.
  • Page 22 Insert the infusion set at a 90° angle. Choose an infusion site away from your waistline, bones, any scar tissue, belly button and recent infusion sites. Press the adhesive plaster firmly onto the infusion site, ensuring that it makes smooth contact with the skin.
  • Page 23 Preparation and start-up Hold the cannula housing firmly to your body. Use the handle to withdraw the introducer needle in a straight, smooth motion. Connect the primed transfer set to the connector plate of the cannula. Before resuming insulin pump therapy, use an insulin bolus of 1.0 U to fill the head set and the soft cannula.

    Multiwave bolus Variable increments can be set for the Quick bolus (0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 units) Communication with the Accu-Chek Combo Meter using Bluetooth ® wire- less technology enables remote control of the Pump by the Meter, as well as transfer of data such as bolus history for subsequent management in the Meter database.

    3.3 Inserting / changing the battery Remove the battery cover, using the battery key to turn the battery cover anti-clockwise. Insert the battery, negative (–) end down, positive (+) end up, into the compartment. Place the cover on the positive end and gently push the battery in, while turning the cover clockwise to partially tighten it.

    3.7 Copying an hourly basal rate If your basal rate is the same for multiple hours in a row, you can save time by copying an hourly basal rate to one or more hours. Press d to move to the BASAL RATE PROGRAMMING 1 (2, 3, 4 or 5 accordingly) screen.

    3.8 Connecting the cartridge, adapter and infusion set Have the following materials ready: · A prepared Accu-Chek 3.15 ml cartridge system with luer-lock (see page 15) · An Accu-Chek Spirit Combo Insulin Pump adapter · A new Accu-Chek infusion set Remove the protective cap from the cartridge.

    Your Accu-Chek Spirit Combo insulin pump 3.9 Returning the piston rod Make sure that your Pump is in STOP mode and the infusion set is not connected to your body. If there is a cartridge already in the Pump, remove it: unscrew carefully, and do not pull the cartridge out until it is completely unscrewed.

    3.10 Inserting a new insulin cartridge see Step 2 Hold the Pump upright. Hold the new filled cartridge so that the connected adapter and infusion set point upwards, parallel, and close see Step 3 to the cartridge compartment. Make sure that the top edge of the threaded part of the adapter is level with the top part of the cartridge compartment.

  • Page 44 Check that the infusion set luer-lock connector is still correctly connected to the adapter. Tighten the infusion set by hand clockwise until it sits tightly in the adapter. Press f after correctly inserting the cartridge. Your Pump performs a self-test. When the self-test is finished, the INFUSION SET PRIMING screen is displayed.

    Starting and stopping insulin delivery 4 Starting and stopping insulin delivery When your Pump is not delivering insulin, this is called STOP mode. When it is delivering insulin, this is called RUN mode. 4.1 Starting insulin delivery In STOP mode, press d to move to the START YOUR PUMP screen.

Turning off the STOP-warning As long as your Pump is in STOP mode, it emits two short beeps – and vibrates once every minute to remind you that no insulin is being delivered.

    RUN mode at a Glance 5 RUN mode at a glance In RUN mode your Pump is delivering insulin to your body according to you basal rate settings and the boluses you program. Some functions such as STANDARD BOLUS and TEMPORARY BASAL RATE are only accessible in RUN.

    5.1 Programming a Quick bolus For discreet and convenient bolus programming without your Meter, you can use the Quick bolus feature on your Pump: From the RUN screen, press and hold s until you hear a beep sequence and feel a vibration. This activates the Quick bolus function.

After the bolus delivery start delay, the Pump beeps three times and then begins to deliver the total bolus amount programmed. A countdown of the remaining bolus amount appears on the display. By default the increment for the Quick bolus is 0.5 U per key press.
