In the event of an engine overheat, it
may be possible to reset the S.A.F.E.
system and restore normal operation:
– The engine must be shut off and
the cooling temperature restored.
I I F F the S. A. F. E. mode activates and
water pressure becomes intermittent
or stops, reduce speed to idle and:
1. Shift to NEUTRAL
2. SHUT OFF the engine
3. Tilt the outboard up
4. Clean the water intake screens of
any blockage
5. Clean the water pump indicator if
any blockage
6. Lower the outboard
7. Restart the engine and run at idle
I I F F cleaning the screens and indicator
does not restore the water pump indi-
cator's steady discharge, the engine
will operate only in S. A. F. E. mode.
Return to harbor immediately. See the

Following E E n n g g i i n n e e S S t t a a r r t t i i n n g g , start the
outboard. If the outboard was winter-
ized, it will emit a puff of smoke on the
first start of the season.
Let engine idle while you:
Observe running quality. If poor, refer
to T T r r o o u u b b l l e e s s h h o o o o t t i i n n g g .
Confirm water pump operation. Water
must flow from the water pump indica-
tor in a steady stream. If it does not,
shut off the outboard and investigate.
Stop the outboard and check the fuel
system for leaks.

I I F F cleaning the screens and indicator
does re-store the water pump indica-
tor's steady dis-charge, you might
have to run for two minutes in NEU-
TRAL to allow the engine to cool and
the warning indicator to turn OFF.
I I M M P P O O R R T T A A N N T T : : If cooling is not re-
stored, the EMM will identify a pro-
gressive overheating condition and
shut off the engine. The "TEMP" warn-
ing will flash. The engine will not re-
start until the engine is allowed to
cool. After any overheat causing en-
gine shutdown, The following items
should be inspected:
– Inspection of the water pump for
excessive wear or damage.
– Inspection of the thermostats.
