PISTON, CYLINDER, AND CRANKSHAFT
Connecting Rod Bearings
Inspect the bearing shells in the connecting rod
large bores and connecting rod caps for the
proper contact pattern and signs of fusion, pitting,
burning, or flanking. Replace any damaged bear-
ings.
IMPORTANT:
NEVER replace only one bearing
shell. Both halves of the bearing must be replaced
if either is worn or damaged.
Clean the surface of the connecting rod, the cap,
the bearing, and the crankpin.
Install the connecting rod bearing shells into their
original connecting rod and cap.
IMPORTANT:
Make sure that the alignment tabs
on the bearing shells properly engage the align-
ment notches in the connecting rod and cap. DO
NOT apply oil to the bearing at this time.

Place a piece of Plastigage on the crankpin, paral-
lel to the crankshaft. DO NOT place the Plasti-
gage over the oil hole.
1. Crank pin
Install the connecting rod cap to its corresponding
connecting rod. Make sure that the arrow mark on
the cap is pointing toward the flywheel side.
Apply engine oil to the connecting rod bolts. Install
and tighten the connecting rod cap nuts in the fol-

lowing manner:
STEP 1 – Tighten the nuts to an initial torque of
13 ft. lbs. (18 N·m).
STEP 2 – Tighten the nuts to a final torque of 26
ft. lbs. (35 N·m).
1. Connecting rod bolts (2)
IMPORTANT:
rod or the crankshaft while the Plastigage is in
place.
Remove the connecting rod and the cap from the
