(2) TROUBLESHOOTING

PROBLEM
Starter turns engine slowly
when cold
Starter turns engine slowly
when hot
When starter engages, it
makes a loud grinding noise
When the starter is engaged,
there is a click and the
engine does not turn
Starter drive gear stays
engaged for some length of
time after the start button
released

(3) REMOVAL

(a) Disconnect the power cable.
(b) Unbolt the starter attachment bolts and nuts.
(c) Retain all existing attach hardware except top bolts which will be replaced.
(d) Remove starter from engine.
The following step removes a pinion shaft support bearing which is pressed into the
crankcase. The bearing may fall apart during extraction. Take care to insure that bearing
(e) Remove needle bearing, if present. Refer to Figure 6.3.17.2
(f) Clean gasket surface on accessory case starter mounting pad.
(g) Thoroughly clean the bearing bore

PROBABLE CAUSE
Weak battery
Bad connection, cable, or
solenoid
Starter damaged by engine
kicking back
Voltage not getting to starter
Starter solenoid defective
Stuck starter solenoid
CAUTION:
needles do not drop into the accessory case
REMEDY
- Charge battery
- Test
- Replace, if necessary
- Clean connections and/or
- replace faulty component
- Correct the ignition problem
- Repair or replace starter
- Replace starter solenoid
- Replace faulty starter

- Replace or repair starter
