Introduction
Computer Overview
~v1odels
330 and 350 are improved versions of the :Model 310 and 320. They were redesigned
for higher performance to meet the compute-intensive requirements for design automation, as
well as scientific analysis, and general purpose computation. Both are more tightly integrated
than their predecessors with fewer physical pieces. They are similar in construction and uses
the same power supply.
For the computers, most noticeable is the different board and card slots. Depending on the
version, there are:
• Four DIO-II system board slots in the standard computer.
• Three system and two standard DIO slots in a computer that's had the 2-s10t DIO back-
plane added.
• Two systerrl and four standard DIO slots in a computer that's had the 4-slot DIO back-
plane added.
Expander Overview
Two direct-connect expanders permit additional accessory boards and cards to be used in the
computer systerrl. Each attaches directly to the computer through a solid connector between
their motherboards.
The HP 98568A Opt.
132 is an improved version of the earlier DIO
expander used with l\10del 310/320 computers. A new expander, the HP 98570A, adds the
larger system board slots to computer systems.
In the expanders, the board and card slots are identified below. Depending on the version, there
are:
• Two system and four standard DIO slots in a standard HP 98570A expander.
• Four systerrl slots in an HP 98570A expander with a delete option for the four DIO slots.
• Eight DIO slots in an HP98568A Opt. 132 expander.
Computer Architecture
Here's an overview of the architecture used in the Model 330/350 computers.
You'll note
that these computer's provide the peak perfonnance potential of the Motorola architecture and
lnaintain Series 300 compatibility.
Model 350 Cache-Based DeSign
The Model 350 eInploys a cache-based design. It has a large cache to acconlodate the 25 MHz
dock rate of the CPU and is 32 Kbytes in size. In addition, the Model 350 provides fast access
tirrles to high-speed RAM over a synchronous bus, the systenl bus. The system bus is connected
between the processor board and RAM assemblies via a special system slot cover plate.
Figure 3-1 is a block diagram of the Model :{30/350 architecture.
