Status bar icons

The icons displayed at the top of the screen provide information about the status of

    Basics Using the Display Use only fingers to use the Display. • D o not allow the Display to come into contact with other electrical devices. Electrostatic discharges can cause the Display to malfunction. • T o avoid damaging the Display, do not Tap it with anything sharp or apply excessive pressure to it with your fingertips. • T he device may not recognize touch inputs close to the edges of the screen, which are outside of the touch input area. • L eaving the Display idle for extended periods may result in afterimages (screen burn-in) or ghosting. Turn off the Display when you do not use the device. Finger gestures Tapping To open an application, to select a menu item, to Press an on-screen button, or to enter a character using the on-screen keyboard, Tap it with a finger.

Dragging To move an icon, thumbnail, or preview to a new location, Touch & Hold it and Drag it to the target position. Double-Tapping Double-Tapping is Tapping twice. Double-Tap on a webpage or image to zoom in on a part. Double-Tap again to return.
  • Page 4 Basics Flicking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the Applications list to see another panel. Flick up or down to scroll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart (Pinch out) on a webpage, map, or image to zoom in a part. Pinch (Pinch in) to zoom out.

    Basics Palm motions Use palm motions to control the device by touching the screen. Before using motions, make sure the palm motion feature is activated. On the Home screen, Tap → Settings → Controls → Palm motion, and then Drag the Palm motion switch to the right. Capture screen Flick your hand across the screen from right to left or Flick from left to right to capture a screenshot. The image is saved in Gallery → Screenshots. It is not possible to capture a screenshot while using some applications. Mute/pause Cover the screen with a palm to mute the device or pause media playback.

    Basics Using Multi Window Use this feature to run multiple applications on the screen at the same time. Only applications on the Multi Window tray can run. To use Multi Window, on the Home screen, Tap → Settings → Device → Multi window, and then Drag the Multi window switch to the right. Opening Multi Window display By enabling this feature, you can open a file from My File or the Video application or an email attachment and display the content automatically in a split screen when in full screen mode. Launching applications in Multi Window Drag your finger from the right edge (black part) of the screen towards the middle of the screen. Alternatively, Touch & Hold The Multi Window tray appears at the right side of the screen.

    Basics Sharing content between applications You can easily share content between applications, such as Email and Internet, by Dragging and dropping them. Some applications may not support this feature. Launch Email and Internet in Multi Window Tap between the application windows, and then Tap Tap the circle between application windows to access the following options: • : Switch locations between Multi Window applications. • : Share items, such as images, text, or links, between application windows by Dragging and dropping them. • : Maximize the window. • : Close the application.

    Basics Notifications window Notification Indicators appear on the Status bar at the top of the screen to report new messages, calendar events, device status, and more. Drag down from the Status bar to open the Notifications window. Scroll the list to see additional alerts. To close the Notifications window, Drag the bar up. From the Notifications window, you can view your device’s current settings or change them. You can select from more features by Dragging the settings icon to the left. • W i-Fi: Activate or deactivate the Wi-Fi feature. • L ocation: Activate or deactivate the GPS feature. • S ound/Vibrate/Mute: Activate or deactivate silent mode. You can vibrate or mute your device in silent mode. • S creen rotation: Allow or prevent the interface from rotating when you rotate the device. • B luetooth: Activate or deactivate the Bluetooth feature. • M obile data: Activate or deactivate the data connection. •...

    Basics Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the device's features. It displays Notification Indicators, widgets, shortcuts to applications, and others. The Home screen can have multiple panels. To view other panels, scroll left or right. Rearranging items Adding an application icon On the Home screen, Tap , Touch & Hold an application icon, and then Drag it into a panel preview. Moving an item Touch & Hold an item and Drag it to a new location. To move it to another panel, Drag it to the side of the screen. Deleting an item Touch & Hold an item, and Drag it to the trash can that appears at the top of the Home screen. When the trash can turns red, release the item. Rearranging panels Adding a new panel Pinch in on the screen and Tap Moving a panel Pinch in on the screen, Touch & Hold a panel preview, and then Drag it to a new location. Deleting a panel Pinch in on the screen, Touch & Hold a panel preview, and then Drag it to the trash can at the top of the screen. Let go of the item once the trash can turns red.

    Basics Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the device as wallpaper for the Home screen. On the Home screen, Touch & Hold the empty area, Tap Set wallpaper → Home screen, and then select one of the following: • G allery: See photos taken by the device’s camera or images downloaded from the Internet. • L ive wallpapers: See animated images. • P hotos: See images in Photos. • W allpapers: See wallpaper images. Select an image, resize the frame if necessary, and then set it as wallpaper. Using widgets Widgets are small applications that provide convenient functions and information on your Home screen. To use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home screen. Some widgets connect to web services. Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges. On the Home screen, Tap → Widgets. Scroll left or right on the widgets panel, and then Touch & Hold a widget and Drag it to the Home screen. Put it on a location you want, resize it by Dragging the frame if necessary, and then Tap anywhere on the screen to save the location of the widget.

    Basics Applications list The Applications list displays icons for all applications, including any new applications installed. On the Home screen, Tap → Apps tab. To view other panels, scroll left or right. Rearranging applications This feature is available only in the customizable grid view. Tap → Edit, Touch & Hold an application, and then Drag it to a new location. To move it to another panel, Drag it to the side of the screen. Organizing with folders Put related applications together in a folder for convenience. Tap → Edit, Touch & Hold an application, and then Drag it to Create folder. Enter a folder name and then Tap OK. Put applications into the new folder by Dragging, and then Tap Save to save the arrangement. Installing applications Use application stores, such as GALAXY Apps, to download and install applications. Uninstalling applications Tap → Uninstall/disable apps, and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled.

    Basics Disabling applications Tap → Uninstall/disable apps, and then select an application to disable it. To enable applications, on the Applications list, Tap → Show disable apps, select the applications, and then Tap Done. • D ownloaded applications and some default applications that come with the device cannot be disabled. • W hen you use this feature, disabled applications disappear from the Apps screen but are still stored in the device. Using applications This device can run many different types of applications, ranging from media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications list, Tap an application icon to open it. Some applications are grouped into folders. Tap a folder → an application to open it. Opening from recently-used applications Tap to open the list of recently-used applications. Tap an application icon to open. Exiting an application Exit applications not in use to save battery power and maintain device performance.

    Basics Entering text Use the Samsung Japanese keyboard or the voice input feature to enter text. Text entry is not supported in some languages. To enter text, you must change the input language to one of the supported languages. Changing the keyboard type Tap any text field, open the Notifications window, Tap Select input method, and then select the type of keyboard to use. Using the Samsung Japanese keyboard Changing the keyboard type Touch & Hold , and then Tap to change the keyboard type. On the floating keyboard, Tap and Hold and move the floating keyboard to another location.

    Basics Handwriting Touch & Hold , Tap , and then write a word with a finger. Predicted words are displayed. You can enter words faster if you select a predicted word. Entering text by voice , and then Tap to enter text by voice. Touch & Hold Activate the voice input feature and then speak into the microphone. The device displays what you speak. To change the language or add languages for voice recognition, Tap Default: English (US) - no additional → Add or remove languages. Copying and pasting Touch & Hold over text, Drag or to select more or less text, and then Tap Copy to copy or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. To paste it into a text entry field, place the cursor at the point where it should be inserted, and then Tap → Paste.

    Basics Connecting to a Wi-Fi network Connect the device to a Wi-Fi network to use the Internet or share media files with other devices.(☞ P.92) Turning Wi-Fi on and off Open the Notifications window, and then Tap Wi-Fi to turn it on or off. • Y our device uses a anharmonic frequency and is intended for use in all European countries. The WLAN can be operated in the EU without restriction indoors, but cannot be operated outdoors. • T urn off Wi-Fi to save the battery when not in use. Joining Wi-Fi networks On the Applications list, Tap Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi, and then Drag the Wi-Fi switch to the right. Select a network from the list of detected Wi-Fi networks, enter a password if necessary, and then Tap Connect. Networks that require a password appear with a lock icon. After the device connects to a Wi-Fi network, the device will automatically connect to it any time it is available. Adding Wi-Fi networks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, Tap Add Wi-Fi network at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID, select the security type and enter the password if it is not a free public Wi-Fi, and then Tap Connect.

    Basics Setting up accounts Google applications, such as Play Store, require a Google account, and GALAXY Apps requires a Samsung account. Create Google and Samsung accounts to have the best experience with the device. Adding accounts To sign up for a Google account, on the Applications list, Tap Settings → General → Accounts → Add account → Google → New. After that, follow the on-screen instructions to create a new account. If you open a Google application while not signed in to your Google account, you can setup an account in the same manner. To sign in with an existing Google account, on the Applications list, Tap Settings → General → Accounts → Add account → Google → Existing. After that, follow the on- screen instructions to complete the account setup. More than one Google account can be used on the device. Set up a Samsung account as well. Deleting accounts On the Applications list, Tap Settings → General → Accounts, select an account name under MY ACCOUNTS, select the account to delete, and then Tap Remove account.

    Basics Transferring files Move audio, video, image, or other types of files from the device to the computer, or vice versa. Connecting with Samsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media contents and personal information with Samsung devices. Download the latest Samsung Kies from the Samsung website. Connect the device to the computer using the Micro USB cable (commercially available) Samsung Kies launches on the computer automatically. If Samsung Kies does not launch, double-click the Samsung Kies icon on the computer. Transfer files between your device and the computer Refer to the Samsung Kies help for more information. Connecting with Windows Media Player Ensure that Windows Media Player is installed on the computer. Connect the device to the computer using the Micro USB cable (commercially available) Open Windows Media Player and synchronize music files Connecting as a media device Connect the device to the computer using the Micro USB cable (commercially available) Open the Notifications window, and then Tap Connected as a media device → Media device (MTP) Tap Camera (PTP) if your computer does not support Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) or not have any appropriate driver installed.

    Basics Security Codes An Optional Services landline Center Access Code is required for you to use this device. The 4-digit Center Access Code you received when you signed up is needed for subscribing to Internet fee-based information. • D o not forget Center Access Code. If you forget this code, contact us for recovery. For details, contact Customer Service ( ☞ P.117). • D o not reveal Center Access Code. SoftBank Mobile Corp. is not liable for misuse or damages. USIM PIN PIN is a code for USIM Card. 9999 by default; enable USIM Card lock to restrict device use. Changing USIM PIN (locking USIM Card) You can set up the device so that it cannot be used when the power is turned on without entering a PIN (locking the USIM Card). On the Applications list, Tap Settings General → Security → Set up SIM card lock Lock SIM card → Enter current PIN → OK The USIM Card lock is now enabled and you can change PIN.

    Basics Securing the device Prevent others from using or accessing personal data and information stored in the device by using the security features. The device requires an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications list, Tap Settings → Device → Lock screen → Screen lock → Pattern. Draw a pattern by connecting four dots or more, and then draw the pattern again to verify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you forget the pattern. Setting a PIN On the Applications list, Tap Settings → Device → Lock screen → Screen lock → PIN. Enter at least four numbers, and then enter the password again to verify it. Setting a password On the Applications list, Tap Settings → Device → Lock screen → Screen lock → Password. Enter at least four characters including numbers and symbols, and then enter the password again to verify it.

    Basics Unlocking the device Turn on the screen by Pressing the Power/Screen lock Key or the Home Key, and enter the unlock code. If you forget the unlock code, take the device to a SoftBank Shop. Updating software You can update the device to the latest software. Use a network to determine whether the device needs to be updated to the latest software and update it if it does. • T he device is designed to automatically perform some communications, such as updating software and maintaining a connection with the server. • U pdating software may take some time. You cannot use the device until the software update has completed. • T he software cannot be updated if there is insufficient available memory necessary for the update. • C heck that there is sufficient battery charge before executing a software update. • P erform the software update in a place with good reception and do not move the device. • Y ou cannot use other features while updating the software. •...

Samsung Kies automatically recognizes the device and shows available updates in a dialogue box, if any. Click the Update button in the dialogue box to start updating. Refer to the Samsung Kies help for details on how to update. • D o not turn off the computer or disconnect the Micro USB cable (commercially available) while the device is updating. • W hile updating the device, do not connect other media devices to the computer. Doing so may interfere with the update process. Updating with only the device The device can be directly updated to the latest software by the firmware over-the-air (FOTA) service. On the Applications list, Tap Settings → General → About device → Software update → Update now.
