memory card without attaching to this reader, there is a possibility
that it cannot be pulled out.

• Operation is not guaranteed on all types of memory card.
• This reader supports MagicGate
. "MagicGate
" is the collective

name of content protection technologies developed by Sony.
Contents that use copyright protection technology, such as music,
can be recordable or playable using combination of a Memory
Stick with MagicGate, this reader and a MagicGate compatible
product.
• The data recorded in SDXC Memory Card can be used only on
host products or computer that support SDXC. Please do not
format the media even though the message appears suggesting the
formatting (initializing) when you connect it to the equipment not
compatible with SDXC.

For Computer users
This reader can be used with a computer with the following OS
installed.

• When using Windows XP at SDXC Memory Card, the update
(KB955704) is required to apply.

• This OS must be factory-installed.
• Operation is not guaranteed for all computers.
• USB connection may not be restored if a computer operation is
resumed after standby, suspend/resume or sleep mode.
For users with products other than a computer
This reader can be used with products that can write or read movies/
photos from/to a memory card. For details, refer to the operating
instructions of the product.
• Operation is not guaranteed when using simultaneously with other
USB devices.
• Do not connect to a compatible product via a USB hub.
Using this Reader
To insert a Memory Stick Duo

Using this Reader with a Computer
This reader can be used with the standard drivers that are
equipped with an OS.
For details, refer to the operating instructions of the computer
or the OS.
For Windows users
1. Insert a memory card. (see illustration
)
2. Connecting this reader to a computer. (see illustration
)
3. Open [Computer] ([My Computer] on Windows XP).
4. Check that a newly recognized [Removable Drive] icon
has appeared.
The removable disk icon can be replaced with the icon of
the memory card by installing a removable disk recognition
software on the computer. Software can be downloaded from the
support site (refer to the URL at the top of this manual).
The disk icon of this reader will not appear if there is no
memory card inserted in this reader.
If the disk icon of this reader does not appear on the desktop
even when the reader is connected to the computer, remove
the reader from the computer. Then, reconnect the reader by
following the steps above.
For Macintosh
®
users
1. Insert a memory card. (see illustration
)
2. Connecting this reader to a computer. (see illustration
)
3. Connection is complete when the disk icon of this
reader appears on the desktop.
The disk icon of this reader will not appear on the desktop if
there is no memory card inserted in this reader.
If the disk icon of this reader does not appear on the desktop
even when the reader is connected to the computer, remove
the reader from the computer. Then, reconnect the reader by
following the steps above.
If you are using a Macintosh computer, there is an operation
limit for transferring/playing files. Music or movie files with
copyright protection technology cannot be transferred or played.
Removing this Reader
For Windows users
1. Make sure the reader is not accessing the memory
card.
2. Double-click
[Safely Remove Hardware] on the task
tray, located at the lower right portion of the screen. In
the window that appears, select the name of the device
that is to be removed, then click [Stop]. When the "Stop
a Hardware Device" screen appears, make sure that the
correct information is displayed, and then click [OK].
When the "Safe to Remove Hardware" message
appears, you may remove this reader. (The icon and
messages that appear may vary depending on the
version of the OS.)
For Macintosh users
1. Make sure the reader is not accessing the memory
card.
2. Move the disk icon of this reader to the trash icon.
3. Remove this reader.
Using the Reader with Products other
than a Computer
Connecting this reader to a compatible product
For the details, please refer to the operating instructions of
compatible products.
1. Insert a memory card. (see illustration
)
2. Connecting this reader to a USB port of compatible
products.
If a memory card is not inserted into this reader, the
compatible product may not be able to recognize the reader.
If the reader is not recognized by the product, remove the
reader from the product. Then, reconnect the reader by
following the steps above.

1. Make sure the reader is not accessing the memory
card.
2. Remove this reader.

• Transfer speed depends on the product used.
• Copyright law prohibits unauthorized use of recording for any
purpose other than personal product.
• Do not strike, bend, drop or wet this reader.
• Do not attempt to dismantle, repair, or alter the reader yourself.
• Do not use or store this reader in the following locations:
– where the range of recommended operating conditions is
exceeded.
– close to heat sources or in direct sunlight
– in dusty, dirty, or humid locations
– under precipitation such as rain
– leave it in a hot vehicle with the windows closed
• Be careful not to get any dirt, dust or other foreign matter onto the
memory card slot of this reader.
• Insert the memory card into this reader as shown in illustration
(
). If the memory card is not inserted correctly, operation may
not be possible, or the memory card may damage.
• Do not use more than one reader at the same time.
• We recommend that you make a backup copy of important data.
• When you use a memory card with Write-Protected switch, by
enabling "LOCK" on Write-Protected switch, data cannot be
recorded, edited or erased. (illustration

• If you format a memory card containing data, the data will be
erased. Be careful not to erase necessary data. To format memory
cards, use a compatible product, such as a digital camera. If a
computer, etc., is used for formatting a memory card, it may lose
its compatibility with applicable products. For details, refer to the
operating instructions of the compatible product, or its customer
support.
• Recorded data may be damaged or lost in the following situations:
– Should any of the following occur while data reading/writing is
in progress:
• the reader is removed.
• the memory card is removed.
• the power of connected product is turned off.
– If you use this media in locations subject to static electricity or
electrical noise.
– If this reader is used other than as illustrated.
