Rear Shock Absorber

Rear Shock Absorber Removal

Seat (see Seat Removal in the Frame chapter)
Side Covers (see Side Cover Removal in the Frame
Muffler (see Muffler Removal in the Engine Top End
Rear Frame with Air Cleaner Housing
Using the jack under the frame, raise the rear wheel off
the ground.
Special Tool - Jack: 57001-1238
When pulling out the mounting bolts, lift the rear
wheel slightly. Forcing or tapping on a bolt could
damage the bolt, sleeve, and bearing
Remove the tie-rod mounting bolt and nut (Front), and
turn it downward.
Remove the rear shock absorber lower mounting bolt [A]
and nut.
Remove the rear shock absorber upper mounting bolt [B],
nut, and pull out the rear shock absorber [C] down and

Rear Shock Absorber Installation

Pack the rocker arm needle bearings with grease.
Tighten the following:
Torque - Rear Shock Absorber Mounting Nut (Upper): 39
N·m (4.0 kgf·m, 29 ft·lb)
Rear Shock Absorber Mounting Nut (Lower): 34
N·m (3.5 kgf·m, 25 ft·lb)
Rear Frame Mounting Bolts: 34 N·m (3.5 kgf·m, 25
Tie-Rod Mounting Nut (Front): 83 N·m (8.5 kgf·m,
61 ft·lb) (KX450D6F)
Tie-Rod Mounting Nut (Front): 59 N·m (6.0 kgf·m,
43 ft·lb) (KX450D7F ∼)

Spring Replacement

In addition to the standard spring, heavy and light springs
are available. If the standard spring is improper for your
purpose, select a proper one according to the rider's weight
or course conditions.
Remove the rear shock absorber (see Rear Shock Ab-
sorber Removal).
Clean the threaded portion on the upper of the rear shock
Hold the lower of the rear shock absorber with a vise.
