The PMR walkie talkie standard is allocated eight PMR
channels in the 446 MHz band and 38 subtones (CTC-
SS codes) for each channel.

The subtones (CTCSS codes) ensure that you only hear
conversations which are intended for your group. You
can disable the CTCSS function by setting subtone to
0, in which case you may hear conversations from
strangers who happen to be within radio range. Walk-
ie talkie devices from other manufacturers also typical-
ly allow the CTCSS function to be disabled, in which
case people you don't know may be able to hear your
conversations as well.
This chapter describes how to set channel and subtone
if you are not using twOutdoor in group mode. In
group mode, semi-automatic functions are provided
for changing channels which ensure that all group
members are on the same channel, see
tions Menu"
The easiest way to determine the best channel and
subtone combination with the lowest interference is to
use the scanning function. You can also adjust the
channel manually. Both of these methods are de-
scribed below.
The maximum range of the walkie talkie varies consid-
erably according to terrain and weather. You can sig-
nificantly increase the range if you switch off the
display of the tw700 by briefly pressing the power
switch on the side of the device when you start to use
the walkie talkie.
