Water Temperature Switch Inspection

Remove the water temperature switch (see Water Tem-
perature Switch Removal in the Cooling System chapter).
Suspend the sensor [A] in a container of water so that the
temperature sensing projection and threaded portion are
Suspend an accurate thermometer [B] in the coolant so
that the sensitive portions [C] are located in almost the
same depth.
The switch and thermometer must not touch the con-
tainer sides or bottom.
Place the container over a source of heat and gradually
raise the temperature of the water while stirring the water
Using a hand tester, measure the internal resistance of
the sensor across the terminal and the body at the tem-
peratures shown in the table.
If the hand tester does not show the specified values, re-
place the switch.
Water Temperature Switch Resistance
Rising temperature:
From OFF to ON at 113 ∼ 117°C (235 ∼ 243°F)
Falling temperature
From ON to OFF at 108°C (226°F)
Less than temperature at ON
ON: Less than 0.5 Ω
OFF: More than 1 MΩ
