12-12 SUSPENSION

Rear Shock Absorber

Spring Preload Adjustment

The spring preload adjuster on each rear shock absorber
has 5 positions so that the spring tension can be adjusted
for different road and loading conditions.
Using the hook wrench [A], turn the adjuster to adjust the
spring tension.
The standard adjuster position for an average-build rider
of 68 kg (150 lb) with no passenger and no accessories
is 2nd step from the weakest position.
If the spring action feels too soft or too stiff, adjust it in
accordance with the following table.

Check to see that both adjusting sleeves are turned to the
same relative position.
If they are not adjusted to the same position, an un-
safe riding condition may result.

Rear Shock Absorber Removal

Using the jack under the frame, steady the motorcycle.
Special Tool - Jack: 57001-1238
Squeeze the brake lever slowly and bind it with a band
[A].
Be sure to hold the front brake when removing the
shock absorber, or the motorcycle may fall over. It
could cause an accident and injury.
Remove the seat (see Seat Removal in the Frame chap-
ter).
Remove the mounting bolts [A] and pull off the rear shock
absorber [B].
