CAM POSITION SENSOR AND ROTOR

REMOVAL

WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could
cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-)
battery cable before proceeding. (00048a)
1.
Disconnect negative battery cable.
2.
Remove sprocket cover. See
NOTES
Make note of cable strap positions and wire routing dur-
ing disassembly.
For more information about the wiring located under-
neath the sprocket cover see
WIRING.
3.
Cut cable straps holding cam position sensor wiring.
4.
See
Figure 4-65.
Disconnect cam position sensor wiring
at connector [14].
5.
Note position of each cam position sensor wiring termi-
nal in plug end of connector.

Figure 4-67.
Remove connector terminal pins (7).

Remove timer cover.
a.
Drill off heads of outer timer cover pop rivets (1)
using a 3/8 in. drill bit.
b.
Tap remaining rivet shafts inboard through holes in
timer cover (2) and inner cover (19).
c.
Remove timer cover. Remove inner cover screws (3)
and inner cover (19).
d.
Carefully remove any remaining pieces of rivets
from gearcase cover timer bore.

To obtain approximate ignition timing
during installation, scribe alignment marks (4) across
cam position sensor (3) in two places.

Remove timer plate studs (4). Carefully
remove cam position sensor. Remove bolt (17) and trig-
ger rotor (16).
10. Carefully remove camshaft oil seal (15) if damaged or if
there is any evidence of oil leakage past the seal.
