PERIODIC MAINTENANCE/LUBRICATION INTERVALS

PERIODIC INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT

INTRODUCTION

This chapter includes all information necessary to perform recommended inspections and adjust-
ments. These preventive maintenance procedures, if followed, will ensure more reliable vehicle opera-
tion and a longer service life. The need for costly overhaul work will be greatly reduced. This informa-
tion applies to vehicles already in service as well as new vehicles that are being prepared for sale. All
service technicians should be familiar with this entire chapter.

Valves* Check valve clearance. Adjust if necessary.
Spark plugs Check condition. Clean or replace of necessary.
Air filter Clean. Replace if necessary.
Check idle speed / synchronization / starter operation.
Carburetor*
Adjust if necessary.
Check fuel hose for cracks or damage.
Fuel line*
Replace if necessary.
Check condition. Replace if necessary.
Fuel filter*
Engine oil Replace (Warm engine before draining).
Replace.
Engine oil filter*
Check operation / fluid leakage / See NOTE.
Brake*
Correct if necessary.
Check operation / fluid leakage / See NOTE.
Clutch*
Correct if necessary.
Check swingarm assembly for looseness.
Swingarm pivot*
Correct if necessary. Moderately repack every
24,000 km or 24 months.**
Rear suspension link Check operation. Apply grease lightly every
24,000 km or 24 months.**
pivots*
Check balance / damage / runout. Replace if necessary.
Wheels*
Check bearing assembly for looseness / damage.
Wheel bearings*
Replace if damaged.
Check bearing assembly for looseness.
Steering bearings* Correct if necessary. Moderately repack every
24,000 km or 24 months.
Check operation / oil leakage. Repair if necessary.
Front forks*
Rear shock absorber* Check operation / oil leakage. Repair if necessary.
Check chain free play / alignment. Adjust if necessary.
Drive chain
Clean and lube.
Check all chassis fittings and fasteners.
Fittings / Fasteners*
Correct if necessary.
Center and
sidestand* Check operation. Repair if necessary.
Check operation. Clean or replace if necessary.
Sidestand switch*
Replace generator brushes every 100,000 km.
