Error and maintenance messages

As with any sophisticated office product, error and maintenance messages may be displayed. The
most common error and maintenance messages are shown below.

Cause
The device is removed from
the USB direct interface while
the data is processing.
Calibration failed.
The toner cartridge is not
installed properly.
It is time to replace the belt
unit.
The drum unit is near the end
of its life.
The drum unit counter was not
reset when a new drum was
installed.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance
Action
Press Stop/Exit. Reinsert the device and try to
print with direct print or PictBridge.
Press Mono Start or Color Start and try it
again.
Do one of the following:
Turn off the machine's power switch. Wait a
few seconds, then turn it on again.
Put in a new drum unit. (See Replacing the
drum unit on page 173.)
Put in a new belt unit. (See Replacing the
belt unit on page 179.)
Put in a new waste toner box. (See
Replacing the waste toner
box on page 184.)
If the problem continues, call your Brother
dealer.
Pull out the drum unit, take out the toner
cartridge that is indicated on the LCD, and put it
back into the drum unit again.
Replace the belt unit. (See Replacing the belt
unit on page 179.)
Use the drum unit until you have a print quality
problem; then replace the drum unit with a new
one.
Press Menu, 8, 4, and then
Drum.
Press OK and press 1 to reset the drum unit
counter.
