Periodic Maintenance Procedures

Brake Lever Free Play Adjustment

Slide the brake lever dust cover [A] out of place.
Loosen the locknut [B] and turn the adjuster [C] so that
the brake lever will have 4 ∼ 5 mm (0.16 ∼ 0.20 in.) of
play.
If it cannot be done, use the adjuster at the end of the
brake cable.
Loosen the locknuts [A] at the lower end of the brake ca-
ble.
Turn the adjuster [B] so that the brake lever has the cor-
rect amount of play, and tighten the locknuts.
If sufficient adjustment can not be made with the adjuster
at the lower end of the brake cable, complete the adjust-
ment with the adjuster at the brake lever, and then tighten
the locknut.
Check for brake drag.
Check braking effectiveness.
Slide the brake lever dust cover back into place.
For minor corrections, use the adjuster at the front brake
lever.
If the brake lever adjustment cannot be made with the
adjuster, move the front brake cam lever to a new posi-
tion on the brake camshaft.

Brake Pedal Free Play Inspection

Check the brake pedal free play [A] when the pedal is
pushed down lightly by hand.
Brake Pedal Free Play
Standard:
If the pedal has improper play, adjust it.
Operate the pedal a few times to see that it returns to its
rest position immediately upon release.
Rotate the rear wheel to check for brake drag.
Check braking effectiveness.
If there is any doubt as to the conditions of the brake,
check the brake parts for wear or damage.
NOTE
20 ∼ 30 mm (0.76 ∼ 1.18 in.)
