Reliability, availability, and serviceability features of the
memory expansion module
Three of the most important features in product design are reliability, availability,
and serviceability (RAS). These factors help to ensure that the integrity of the data
processed in your memory expansion module is preserved, that the expansion
module is available when you want to use it, and should a failure occur, you can
easily diagnose and repair the failure with minimal inconvenience.
The memory expansion module has a 1-year parts and 1-year labor limited
warranty, or it assumes the warranty of the x3850 X5 or x3950 X5 host server to
which it is attached, whichever is longer.
The following is an abbreviated list of the RAS features that the expansion module
supports:
v Chipkill memory protection
v Hot-swap and redundant cooling with fan-speed-sensing capability (front
v Hot-swap and redundant power supplies (rear serviceability)
v Information LED panel
v In-rack serviceability
v Memory redundant bit steering (RBS) and error correcting code (ECC)
v Memory mirroring support (mirrored DIMMs are mutually exclusive of each
v QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) fail down
v Rear serviceability power supplies

IBM System x3850 X5 and x3950 X5 Types 7145, 7146, 7143, and 7191: Installation and User's Guide
The memory expansion module has light path diagnostics LEDs (front and rear)
to indicate hardware, scaling, and power problems.
The memory expansion module supports a maximum of two 675-watt hot-swap
power supplies and five single-motor hot-swap fans. The redundant fans
provide continued cooling if one fan fails. The memory expansion module comes
with one 675-watt hot-swap power supply and five fans. If a problem occurs
with one of the power supplies, the other power supply can meet the power
requirements.
The memory bus supports up to 512 GB of memory (1 TB when 32 GB DIMMs
are available). The memory controller supports error correcting code (ECC) for
up to 32 industry-standard 1066 MHz PC3-10600R-999 or 1333 MHz PC3-8500,
DDR3 (third-generation double-data-rate), registered, synchronous dynamic
random access memory (SDRAM) DIMMs.
