Using the
Compound Rest
The compound rest is used to cut tapers on parts
or to set the proper infeed angle when threading.
It may also be used to cut specific lengths longitu-
dinally, when set parallel to the spindle axis.
To set the angular position:
1.
Loosen the hex nuts, one on each side of the
compound rest (see Figure 28).
2.
Rotate the compound rest to the desired
angular position using the scale.
3.
Tighten the two hex nuts. Be sure to not over-
tighten, as you may strip threads or crack or
distort the base casting.

Using the Tool Post

The four-way tool post (Figure 29) is mounted on
top of the compound rest, and allows a maximum
of four tools to be loaded simultaneously.
The four-way tool post allows for quick indexing
to new tools. This is accomplished by rotating the
top handle counterclockwise and then rotating the
tool post to the desired position. Rotate the top
handle clockwise to lock the tool into position.
