2 Using the SSTK Deployment Workflow

Server deployments using SSTK involve four main stages. This chapter provides a high level
overview of the deployment workflow including the following topics:
"Setting Up a Model Server" (page 22)
"Creating a Server Profile" (page 22)
"Setting Up the Toolkit Environment" (page 23)
"Launching the Server Replication" (page 23)
"Capturing and Deploying System Images" (page 23)
???
"SAN Environment Autoconfiguration" (page 24)
"Customizing the Toolkit Environment" (page 25)

Setting Up a Model Server

If you do not have a preconfigured HP Integrity server similar to those you want to deploy, select
one of the servers to be deployed and configure it as the model server. You can configure the
server using the EFI-based setup utility, HP Smart Setup, that is included in the HP Integrity
Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux. You can obtain the latest version of the HP Integrity
Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux at the following Web site:
http://www.hp.com/go/integritylinuxessentials
You can configure the controllers using the HP Option ROM Configuration for Arrays (ORCA)
EFI application before booting the OS, or you can run the Array Configuration Utility (ACU)
after the OS is installed.
Ensure that the supported Linux distribution media is available as it is needed during installation.

Creating a Server Profile

A server profile is like the DNA of all servers in the deployment. It includes the server EFI
environment variables, the I/O configuration, the OS and drivers, and installed applications. The
server profile is stored in the repository. Creating it involves the following tasks:
1.
Prepare the workstation: Install applications that allow you to burn a bootable CD or DVD
(k3b or Xcdroast). For more information, see
2.
Unpack the toolkit: Download the SSTK software package and expand it on the workstation.
The directory structure of the software package is important. It forms the framework of the
repository and is designed to help you set up the server profile. The scripts expect this
structure. Although you can change the scripts, retaining this structure saves you some
customization effort. For more information, see
3.
Set up the unattended OS installation: SSTK provides one sample "answer file" (profile)
for each supported distribution, which answer the questions that you are asked during an
interactive installation. For more information, see
(page 32)
4.
Install additional applications: HP recommends that you update the replica servers with
the latest drivers and utilities and set up the servers as managed systems. This task involves
installing the HP Integrity Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux on each server, which is
made easy using the SSTK. You can extend the unattended installation process to include
the HP Integrity Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux. For installation instructions, see HP
Integrity Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux User's Guide at:
