    Introduction The Electronic Viewfi nder (EVF) The electronic viewfi nder provides the same information as the monitor, and can be used when bright light- ing conditions make the display in the monitor diffi cult to see. To switch between the monitor and electronic viewfi nder, press the EVF/LCD button (your selection remains in eff ect when the camera is turned off or the mode dial is rotated to another setting).

    Inserting the Batteries The camera takes four AA alkaline, lithium, or rechargeable Ni-MH batteries. A set of four alkaline bat- teries is supplied with the camera. Insert the batteries in the camera as described below. Open the battery-chamber cover. Slide the battery-cham- ber latch in the direction shown and open the bat- tery-chamber cover.

If the battery-chamber cover does not close, check that the batteries are in the correct orientation and try again. 2 Tip: Using an AC Power Adapter The camera can be powered by an optional AC power adapter and DC coupler (sold separately).

    Holding the Camera Hold the camera steady with both hands and brace your elbows against your sides. Shaking or unsteady hands can blur your shots. To prevent pictures that are out of focus or too dark (un- derexposed), keep your fi n- gers and other objects away from the lens and fl ash.

    Intelligent Face Detection Intelligent Face Detection allows the camera to automatically detect human faces and set focus and exposure for a face anywhere in the frame for shots that emphasize portrait subjects.     N Using the Flash (Intelligent Flash) When the fl ash is used, the camera’s Intelligent Flash system instantly analyzes the scene based on such factors as the brightness of the subject, its position in the frame, and its distance from the camera. Flash output and sensitivity are adjusted to ensure that the main subject is correctly exposed while preserving the eff ects of ambient background lighting, even in dimly-lit indoor scenes.
