Gasoline
Use automotive gasoline(unleaded or low leadedto minimizecombus-
tionchamberdeposits)with a minimumof 87 octane.Gasolinewith
up to 10%ethanolor 15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButylEther)can be
used. Neveruse an oil/gasolinemixtureor dirty gasoline.Avoidgetting
dirt, dust,or waterin the fueltank. DONOT use E85gasoline.
Refuelina well-ventilated areawith the enginestopped.Donot
smokeor allowflamesor sparksin the area wherethe engine is
refueledor wheregasolineis stored.
Do notoverfillthe fuel tank.After refueling,make surethetank
cap is closedproperlyand securely.
Be carefulnot to spill fuelwhen refueling.Spilledfuel or fuelvapor
may ignite. I fany fuel isspilled,makesurethe area isdry before
startingthe engine.
Avoidrepeatedor prolongedcontactwith skin or breathingof
vapor.
Use extremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremely
flammableand the vaporsare explosive.Neverfuel the machine
indoors or whilethe engineishot or running.Extinguishcigarettes,
cigars, pipesand othersourcesof ignition.

Cleanaroundfuel fill beforeremovingcapto fuelto avoiddirt and
debrisfallingintofuel tank.
A fuellevelindicatorislocatedin thefuel tank. Filltank untilfuel
reachesthe fuel levelindictor.See Figure10 inset.Be carefulnot
to overfill.
Starting
The Engine
Determinethatyour home'swiringisa three-wiregroundedsystem.
Ask a licensedelectricianifyouare notcertain.
If you havea groundedthree-prongreceptacle,proceedas follows.
If you do not havethe properhousewiring, DO NOTusethe electric
starterunder anyconditions.
1.
Plugthe extensioncord intothe outlet locatedon the engine's
surface.Plug theother end of extensioncord intoa three-prong
120-volt,grounded,ACoutlet in a well-ventilated area.

Movethrottlecontrolto FAST(rabbit),_
position.
3.
Movechoke controlto the CHOKEposition

start). If engineis warm,placechokecontrol in RUNposition.

Pushprimerthree(3) times,makingsureto cover vent holewhen
pushing.If engineis warm,pushprimeronly once.Alwayscover
vent hole whenpushing.Coolweathermay requireprimingto be
repeated.
5.
Pushand hold starterbuttondownto startengine.Oncethe
engine starts,immediately releasestarterbutton.Electric
starteris equippedwith thermaloverloadprotection;systemwill
temporarilyshutdownto allow starterto cool ifelectricstarter
becomesoverloaded.
6.
As the enginewarms,slowlyrotatethe chokecontrolto RUN
position.Ifthe enginefalters, restartengineand run with choke
controlat half-chokepositionfor a short periodof time,and then
slowlyrotatethe chokeintoRUNposition.
7.
After engineis running,disconnectpowercord fromelectric
starter.Whendisconnecting, a lwaysunplugtheend at the wall
outlet beforeunplugging the oppositeend fromthe engine.
Recoil
Starter
Alwayskeephandsand feet clearof movingparts.Do not usea
pressurizedstartingfluid. Vaporsare flammable.
NOTE: Forlocationof all the enginecontrolsreferredto inthis section,
referto Figure9 on page 12.
NOTE:Allowtheengineto warm up for a few minutesafter starting.
Theenginewill not developfull poweruntilit reachesoperating
temperatures.

Makecertain boththe augercontroland drivecontrolare in the
disengaged(released)position.
2.
insert key intoslot. Makesureit snapsinto place.Do notattempt
to turnthe key.
NOTE:The enginecannotstartwithoutthe key fully inserted intothe
switch.
Electric
Starter
Theoptionalelectricstarterisequippedwith a groundedthree-wire
powercord and plug,and isdesignedto operateon 120volt AC
householdcurrent.It mustbe usedwith a properlygroundedthree-
prong receptacleat all timesto avoidthe possibilityof electricshock.
Followall instructions carefullypriorto operatingthe electricstarter.
DO NOTuseelectricstarterin the rain.
Donot pull the starterhandlewhile theengine running.
1. Movethrottlecontrolto FAST(rabbit)_
position.
2. Movechoke controlto the CHOKEposition I.,,¢1(coldengine
start). If engineis warm,placechokecontrol in RUNposition.
3. Pushprimerthree(3) times,makingsureto cover vent holewhen
pushing.If engineis warm,pushprimeronly once.Alwayscover
vent hole whenpushing.Coolweathermay requireprimingto be
repeated.
4. Pullgently on the starterhandleuntilit beginsto resist,thenpull
quicklyand forcefullyto overcomethecompression.Engineshould
start. Donot releasethe handleand allowit to snapback.Return
ropeSLOWLYto originalposition.If required,repeatthis step.
5. As the enginewarms,slowlyrotatethe chokecontrolto RUNposi-
tion. Ifthe enginefalters,restartengineand runwith choke control
at half-chokepositionfora short periodof time,and thenslowly
rotatethechoke intoRUNposition.
Toavoidunsupervisedengineoperation,neverleavethe machine
unattendedwith the enginerunning.Turnthe engineoff after useand
removeignition key.
