ENGINE CONTROLS
Stop Switch
Pushthe switchto ON priorto chokingfor the enginestart; pushto
OFFto shutthe enginedown.
Choke Control
Thechokecontrol is usedto chokeoff the carburetorand assistin
startingthe engine.
Starter Handle
Thestarterhandleis locatedon the engine.Pull the starterhandleto
startengine.
Control Handle
Thecontrol handlehasthreepositions.See Figure4-2.
• FORWARD: Movethe control handleFORWARD or DOWNto
movethe wedgeand splitwood.
NOTE:TheControlHandlewill returnto theneutralpositionas soonas
the handleisreleased.(ForwardPosition only)
NEUTRAL:Releasethecontrol handleor movetheleverto neutral
positionto stop thewedgemovement.
REVERSE:Movethecontrol handleBACKor UPto returnthe
wedgetowardthe cylinder.The controlhandle staysin the return
(Reverse)positionand returnsto neutralautomatically whenfully
retracted.
NOTE:The reversepositionmayalso be operatedback to neutral
positionmanually,if necessary.
GAS AND OiL FILL-UP
iMPORTANT: Y ourlog splittermay be shippedwith motoroil inthe
engine.You MUSTcheckthe oil levelbeforeoperating.Be carefulnot
to overfill.
Use extremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely
flammableand the vaporsare explosive.Neverfuel machineindoors
or whilethe engineis hotor running.
Oil
1. Removeoil fill dipstick.
2. Checktheoil levelmakingcertainnot to rub the dipstickalong the
inside wallsof the oil fill tube.This would resultina false dipstick
reading.Refillto the FULLmarkon thedipstick,if necessary.
Replacethedipstickand tighten.
3. If necessary,with the log splitteron levelground,usea funnelto fill
enginewith oil to the FULLmarkon the dipstick.Be careful notto
overfill.Overfillingwill causethe engineto smokeprofuselyand will
resultin poor engineperformance.
4. Checktheoil levelthreetimesprior to startingtheengineto be
certainyou'vegottenan accuratedipstickreading.Runningthe
enginewith too little oil can result inpermanentenginedamage.

Gasoline
1. Removethe fuelcap from thefuel tank.
2. Makesurethe containerfrom whichyou will pourthe gasolineis
cleanand free from rust or foreignparticles.Neverusegasoline
that may be stalefrom long periodsof storagein itscontainer.
Gasolinethat has been sittingfor any periodlongerthan fourweeks
shouldbe consideredstale.
3. Fillthe fueltank with about 1.5quartsof clean, freshgasolinewith a
minimumof 85 octane.
NOTE:Gasolinecan be added to theenginewhen thelog splitteris
ineitherthe horizontalor verticalposition.However, t hereare less
obstructionswhenthe beamis inthe verticalposition.
NOTE:Donot usegasolinecontainingmethanol.Gasolinecontaining
up to about10%ethanolor up to 15%methyltertiarybutyl ether
(MTBE)maybe used,but will requirespecialcare whenthe engineis
Idt unusedfor an extendedperiod.
4. Replacethe fuelcap.
NOTE:Toavoidengineproblems,thefuel systemshouldbe emptied
beforestoragefor30 daysor longer.Drainthe gas tank,startthe
engineand let it run untilthe fuel linesand carburetorare empty.Use
fresh fuelthe next season.See the STORAGE sectionfor additional
information.
STOPPING
ENGINE
1. Pushthe stop switchto OFE
2. Disconnectthe sparkplug wireand groundit againsttheengine to
preventunintendedstarting.
