16 Controlling server access to volumes

Application servers (servers), also called clients or hosts, access storage volumes on HP LeftHand
Storage using either Fibre Channel or iSCSI connectivity. You set up each server that needs to
connect to volumes in a management group in the CMC. We refer to this setup as a "server
connection." Server connections can be single servers or server clusters, and can be configured
for both Fibre Channel and iSCSI transport, as long as there is only one server connection to a
volume. Use server clusters in the CMC to assign volumes to the clustered application servers that
are accessing the storage volumes. For example, create two servers and cluster them to assign two
volumes to a Microsoft Exchange cluster or VMware ESX Server simultaneously.
You can set up iSCSI servers to connect to volumes in three ways. All three ways use the virtual IP
(VIP) for discovery and to log in to the volume from a server's iSCSI initiator:
iSCSI with VIP and load balancing—Use the load balancing option when you set up a server
connection in the CMC to balance connections to the HP LeftHand Storage.
Microsoft DSM or HP LeftHand DSM for Microsoft MPIO (if using)—Automatically establishes
multiple connections to the HP LeftHand Storage.
iSCSI with VIP only.
Configure Fibre Channel servers using a list of unassigned initiator WWPNs, or you can manually
configure an initiator WWPN.
NOTE:
Before setting up a server connection, make sure you are familiar with the Fibre Channel
or iSCSI information in
Setting up server connections to volumes requires the general tasks outlined in
Table 61 Overview of configuring server access to volumes
Task
Ensure that an iSCSI initiator is installed on the server.
In the CMC, add the server connection to the management
group and configure access for that server.
Optional: Cluster multiple servers in the CMC to connect
multiple volumes to clustered application servers.
In the CMC, assign volumes to the server or server cluster.
In the initiator on the server, log on to the volume or LUN.
On the server, configure the volume or LUN using disk
management tools.

For More Information
For iSCSI connectivity, if you are using the HP LeftHand
DSM for Microsoft MPIO, ensure that both the Microsoft
MPIO and the DSM for MPIO are also installed on the
server. Refer to the HP LeftHand Storage DSM for MPIO
