Recommended versus required IP addresses

As long as sufficient IP addresses are allocated during the network configuration process, the
B6000 Backup System will automatically assign IP addresses for all the nodes in the system when
the network is initially configured and, subsequently, when additional couplets are added.
If sufficient IP addresses are not allocated, the automatic IP address assignment process cannot be
performed. When additional couplets are added, it will be necessary to redo the network
configuration process and allocate a range sufficient for all IPs required by the system. Any IP
addresses that have been assigned to the nodes during the previous configuration will not be
preserved. Even if you enter the same physical IP addresses, the Virtual Data IP addresses will
change and you will need to reconfigure backup targets and replication. (You will not lose any
data.)
The following table summarizes the combined physical (P) and virtual (V) IP address requirements
for all possible couplet configurations. Ideally, you should always assign enough IP addresses to
cater for expansion, namely the values in the 4 couplet column.
