HYDRAULIC
FLUID AND iNLET FILTER
Stopthe engineand relievehydraulicsystempressurebeforechang-
ing or adjustingfittings,hoses,tubing,or othersystemcomponents.
Checkthehydraulicfluid levelin the log splitterreservoirtank before
eachuse. Maintainthe fluid levelwithinthe rangespecifiedon the
dipstickat all times.
Changethe hydraulicfluid in the reservoirevery 100 hoursof opera-
tion. Followthe stepsbelow:
1.
Placea suitableoil collectioncontainerunderthe tank.
2.
Disconnectthe suctionhosefromthe bottomof the reservoirtank.

Carefullyunthreadthe inletfilter and clean it with penetrating oil.

Allowthe fluidto drain into a suitablecontainer.
NOTE:The reservoirtank hasa capacityof 3 gallonsand the entire
hydraulicsystemhasa capacityof approximately 4.7gallons.
5.
Reinstall t he filter inletscreenand hose.Tightenthe hoseclamp.
6.
Checkthe fluidlevelusingthe dipstick.Do notoverfill.
NOTE:Approvedfluids includeShellTellus®$2 M32 HydraulicFluid,
Dexron®III/ Mercon®automatictransmissionfluid, Pro-Select
TM
AW-32HydraulicOil or IOWAW-lSO viscositygrade32 hydraulicoil. It
is recommended that fluids notbe mixed.
7.
Replacethe venteddipsticksecurely,tighteningit untilthe top of
the threadsare flush with topof the pipe.
8.
Disconnectthe sparkplug and primethe pumpby pullingthe
recoilstarteras far as it will go. Repeatapproximately 10times.
9.
Reconnect t he spark plugwire and startthe enginefollowingthe
instructionsin the Operationsectionof this manual.
10. Usethe controlhandleto engagethe wedgeto the farthest
extendedposition.Thenretractthe wedge.
11. If necessaryrefillthe reservoirwithin rangemarkedon the
dipstick.See Figure20.

12. Extendand retractthe wedge12 completecyclesto remove
trappedair in the system(the systemis "self-bleeding").
Muchof the originalfluidhas beendrawnintothe cylinderand hoses.
Makecertain to refillthe reservoirto preventdamageto the hydraulic
pump. Failureto refillthe tank willvoid the log splitter'swarranty.
NOTE:Somefluidmay overflowfromthe vent plug as the system
buildsheatandthe fluid expandsand seeksa balancedlevel. Do
notoperatethe log splitterwithouttheproperamountof fluid in the
reservoi r tank.
13. Maintain thefluidlevelwithinthe rangespecifiedon thedipstickat
all times.Whencheckingthefluid,alwaysmakesureto tightenthe
dipstickuntilthe topof thethreadsare flushwith thetopof the pipe.
NOTE:Alwaysdisposeof anyused hydraulicfluidand engineoil at
approvedrecyclingcentersonly.
