Panasonic Upgrades KX-TDA50, Adds SIP Trunking
Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company releases new Version 5.0 software for its KX-TDA50, a digital hybrid
IP PBX phone system for small businesses and residences. The previous Version 4.0 added support for IP
telephones. Now, Version 5.0 adds SIP trunking support, a popular offer which allows the
system to transmit both voice and data packets to a service provider over a single IP
circuit, eliminating the need for VoIP gateways or separate voice connections such as T1,
ISDN PRI or analog lines.
Enterprises that take advantage of SIP trunking not only save equipment costs, but also
reduce long distance charges since SIP calls travel over the Internet or provider's IP
network before terminating on the local public switched telephone network. SIP trunking
enables ISDN-like features (Direct Inward Dialing, Caller ID, Call Forwarding, Call Blocking,
for example) over a data connection, and in addition, transmitting both voice and data traffic over the Internet opens
the door to converged applications such as video and collaboration. The entire Panasonic digital system portfolio is
now SIP-enabled.
The KX-TDA50 is a compact, modular unit that supports 12 trunk ports which can be 12 analog trunks, 12 BRI
channels, four IP (H.323) or eight SIP trunks. SIP trunking requires a 4-channel trunk card which is expandable to
eight channels via a second card. The KX-TDA50 unit also supports 24 wired extensions (or 48 wired extensions
using Panasonic's eXtra Device Port (XDP) or Digital XDP functionality) plus four extension ports on the basic unit.
The utilization of eight Cell Stations adds support for 28 multi-cell wireless DECT handsets, and a 4-port IP Extension
card connects up to four IP extensions. The new V5.0 software, a free download for existing customers, also adds
support for 8-channel cell stations, 8-digit extensions on TVA voicemail and a hotel room check-out feature.

TelecomTactics Takeaway: Panasonic, always mindful of its customer base, continues to enhance earlier business
telephony systems, recently adding popular SIP trunking support for the KX-TDA50 digital hybrid IP PBX for small
businesses and residences (to 52 wired/wireless stations). Outside the U.S., this system (known as KX-TDA30)
already offered SIP trunking support; in Europe, SIP trunking has been tested with more than 25 providers, to date.
While updating the earlier KX-TDA and KX-TDE systems, Panasonic is also rolling out new platforms and solutions.
In fourth quarter 2008, Panasonic announced the Enhanced Communications Solutions, a' total solution package'
that encompasses the recently-introduced KX-NCP rack-mount business telephony systems, KX-NCP500 (to 68
stations) and KX-NCP1000 (to 108 stations), as well as digital, IP and SIP telephones, DECT 6.0 wireless
telephones, desktop and business applications, video cameras and third party applications.
