A, WARNING
At the time ofmanu_cturethiswater heaterwasprovided with
a combination temperature-pressures relief valvecertifiedby a
nationally recognized testinglaboratory that maintains periodic
inspectionof productionof listedequipmentor materials,as
meetingthe requirements fur ReliefValvesandAutomatic Gas
ShutoffDevices fur Hot Water Supply Systems, and the latest
edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the coderequirements of ASME. I
replaced,_e valvemustmeet the requirements of localcodes
but not lessthan a combination temperature and pressure relie
valvecertifiedasmeetingthe requirements fur ReliefValvesand
Automatic GasShutoffDevices fur Hot Water Supply Systems,
ANSI Z2h22 by a nationally recognizedtestinglaboratorythat
maintains periodicinspec_on of production of listedequipment
or materials.
The valvemust be marked with a maximum set pressure not
to exceed the marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
water heater (150 Ibedsq.in.) and a dischargecapacity not
lessthan the water heater input rate as shownon the model
rating plate. (Electric heaters - watts dividedby 1000 x 3415
equal BTU/Hr. rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictional authorit_whilemandating t_e useof a
temperature-pressure r eliefvalvecomplying with ANSI Z2h22
andASME,mayrequire a valvemodeldifferent from the onefur-
nishedwith the waterheater
Compliance with suchlocalrequirements must be satlslied by
the installeror end user of the water heater with a locally pre-
scribed temperature-pressure r elief valveinstalledin the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeof the factory fur-
nishedvalve.
For safeoperationofthe water heater,the reliefvalvemustnot
beremoved from it'sdesignated opening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure reliefvalvemustbe installed di_.'tly
intothe fittingof the water heaterdesignated fur the reliefvalve.
Position the valvedownward and provide tubingso that anydis-
chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at any distance
below the structuralfloor Be certain that no contactis made
with anyliveelectrical p art. The discharge o pening must not be
blocked or reduced in sizeunder anycircumstances. Excessive
length, over 30 feet, or useof more than fourelbowscancause
restriction and reducethe discharge c apacity ofthe valve.
No valveor other obstruction isto be placedbetween the relief
valveand the tank. Do nut connecttubing directlyto discharge
drainunless a 6" air gapisprovided. To preventbodily injury,haz-
ard to life,or propertydamage, t he reliefvalvemustbe allowed
to discharge water in quantities shouldcircumstances demand.
If the dischargepipe is not connected to a drain or other
suitable means, the water flow may cause property
damage.
The Discharge Pipe:
Must not be smallerin sizethan the outlet pipesizeofthe
valve, or have any reducing
couplings or other
restrictions.
Must not be pluggedor Mocked.
Must be of material listedfor hot water distribution.
Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of
both the temperature-pressurerelief valve, and the dis-
chargepipe.
Mustterminate at an adequatedrain.
Mustnot haveanyvalvebetweenthe reliefvalveandtank
AWARNING
J
HAZARD OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK! Before removing
any access panels or servicing the water heater, make I
sure the electrical supply to the water heater is turned
"OFF". Failure to do this could result in DEATH, SERI-
OUS BOD LY NJURY,OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are
intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a tem-
)erature which will satisfyspaceheating, clotheswashing,
dish washing, and other sanitizing needs can scald and
permanently injure you upon contact. Some people are
more likely to be permanently injured by hot water than
others. These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or
physically/mentally handicapped. If anyone using hot
water in your home fits into one of these groups or if
there is a local code or state law requiring a certain tem-
perature water at the hot water tap, then you must take
special precautions. In addition to usingthe lowest possi-
ble temperature setting that satisfies your hot water
needs, a means such as a mixing valve, shall be used at
the hot water taps used by these people or at the water
heater. Mixing valves are available at plumbing supply or
hardware stores. Follow manufacturers instructions for
installation of the valves. Before changingthe factory set-
ting on the thermostat,
read the "Temperature
Regulation" section in this manual.

INSULATING
JACKE
Nhen installing an external
water heater insulation
acket on an electric water
heater:
:.

b. DO NOT put insulation over the access coversor any
access
areas.
c. DO NOT cover or remove operating instructions, and
safety related warning labels and materials affixed to the
water heater.
_,WARNING
Do not usethis appliance if any part of it has been under
water, An electrical short or malfunction could occur. The
water heater should be rep aced.
2
_, CAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of
the water heater must be accomplishedin sucha manner
that if the tank or any connectionsshouldleak, the flow of
water will not causedamage to the structure. When such
locations cannot be avoided, a suitable drain pan should
be installed under the water heater. Drain pans are avail-
