Assembling the Aluminum Ramps

  1. With the planks cut to the proper length, one end of each plank slides up over the end (with mounting holes) of each Ramp. Mark holes in each plank for drilling. Remove plank from Ramp and drill holes in plank using 5/16" diameter bit -see illustrations below. Note: Proper assembly will leave the gap noted in illustration C in Setting Up and Using the Aluminum Ramp Kit.
From the top of each plank, insert Bolts (3) through mounting holes to join the plank and Ramp together. Note: Hammer on each bolt head (to engage bolt shoulder into plank) to prevent bolt from turning. Secure from underside using Nuts (4).
    Assembling the Aluminum Ramps
  2. On underside of each Ramp: Remove backing from each Protective Pad (2) and align and adhere Protective Pad to front edge of each Ramp - see photo B in Setting Up and Using the Aluminum Ramp Kit .
  3. For added Ramp stability, insert Pins (5) through Ramp and into pre-drilled mounting holes in vehicle's tailgate - see photo B in Setting Up and Using the Aluminum Ramp Kit.
Drilling holes on the ve-NOTICE hicle's tailgate may affect vehicle manufacturer's warranty for truck bed/tailgate.

Plan for drilling holes in tailgate: Review the suggestions and warnings already mentioned in this manual for the proper positioning of each Ramp against the tailgate. Using the Pin mounting holes in Ramp as a guide, mark and drill holes (5/16" diameter) into the tailgate.

Make sure that there are no wires or other obstuctions in the drilling path.
With holes drilled, two Pins (5) can be inserted through each Ramp and into the tailgate to securely hold each Ramp in place during use. When work is done, the Pins can be removed and the Ramps removed from the tailgate.

Using the Aluminum Ramps

  1. Before each use check that the hardware attaching the planks to the Ramps is tightly secure. Make sure that Ramps and planks are clean and free of grease.
  2. Position each Ramp so that the lip of the Ramp is in solid contact with the tailgate of the vehicle. Always secure both Ramps to the vehicle with tie-downs and/or rope (both not included) before each use. Make sure that the Ramps are solidly in place and will not move, or slide while loading/unloading.
  3. Before each use, re-read and adhere to all warnings and instructions in the Personal and Work Area Safety section of this manual.

  4. Never ride on or drive a powered vehicle up or down the Ramps. Equipment should be rolled up or down the Ramps, or pulled with a winch.

Maintaining the Aluminum Ramp Kit

  1. The general condition of this product should be checked before each use. Make sure that all hardware is tightened. Make sure that the Ramps do not have any structural damage. Make sure the planks are in good condition.
  2. Do not use the Aluminum Ramps if any damage is noted. If damaged, the product should not be repaired, but should be replaced.

  2. Personal and Work Area Safety
    1. Always wear ANSI approved safety goggles.
    2. Always wear hearing protec- tection when working in noisy environments. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise can cause hearing loss.
    3. Use safety equipment. Safety shoes, hard hat and work gloves must be used for applicable conditions.
    4. Dress appropriately. Never wear loose fitting clothing or jewelry when working. Contain long hair, and keep hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts.
    5. Use common sense when working. Stay alert and concentrate when setting up and using the Aluminum Ramp Kit. Never work while under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medications.
    6. While setting up the Aluminum Ramp Kit keep work area clean and well lighted. Keep spectators and children out of the work area.
  3. Use of the Aluminum Ramp Kit
    1. Do not modify this product and do not use this product for purposes that it was not designed for.
    2. Each Aluminum Ramp is designed to be bolted to a solid, hardwood plank (2" thick, 8" wide, with plank length determined by the height of the loading area this Ramp is to be used with - see height guidelines. Planks must be purchased separately and are not included in the Aluminum Ramp Kit.

    3. The maximum load capacity of each Ramp is 700 Lbs. Do not exceed this maximum capacity. Note: The Ramp maximum load capacity may exceed the maximum load capacity of the planks used. Planks may need reinforcement. Use extreme caution when selecting planks for each Ramp.
    4. Always wear ANSI approved safety goggles when loading and unloading.
    5. Use safety equipment. Wear a hard hat, safety shoes and work gloves when loading and unloading.
    6. Never ride on or drive a powered vehicle up or down the Ramps. Equipment should be rolled up or down the Ramps, or pulled with a winch. If using a winch, read and understand all safety warnings and instructions provided by the manufacturer of the winch.
    7. When the Aluminum Ramps are connect-ed to a vehicle for loading or unloading, the vehicle must be parked on a solid, level location, safely away from traffic; the vehicle's engine must be OFF, with parking brake ON, and wheels chocked.
    8. Always secure both Ramps to the vehi-cle, tailgate or loading surface with tie-downs and/or rope (both not included) before each use. Make sure that the Ramps are solidly in place and will not move, or slide while loading/unloading.
    9. The Aluminum Ramps, wood planks and the tailgate of the vehicle must all be clean and dry before loading/unloading. Check to make sure hardware is tightly secured.
    10. Be careful when handling the Aluminum Ramps; the Aluminum Ramps have sharp edges which can cause injury.
    11. If Aluminum Ramps are connected to a vehicle's tailgate, the tailgate must be rated to support the maximum rated capacity of 700 Lbs. per Ramp (1400 Lbs. total).
    12. Be aware of the danger of "dynamic loading". This situation arises when a load is dropped onto the Aluminum Ramps and wood planks, resulting in a short term excessive load. Dynamic loading can result in damage and failure of the Aluminum Ramps, the wood planks, and/or damage to the vehicle, and personal injury to the person loading or unloading equipment.
    13. The Aluminum Ramps are for use with 2 or 4 wheeled vehicles. Do not use these Ramps to load a 3 wheeled vehicle. The tires of the vehicle being loaded must not be wider than the 8" width of the wooden planks.
    14. Never use the Aluminum Ramps and wood planks to load people or animals into a vehicle. Keep children and spectators away when loading, unloading and using this product.
    15. The width of the Ramps is 8". Make sure the tires of the vehicle being rolled up and down the Ramps are less than 8" in width.
    16. Maneuvering and rolling a heavy ATV, motorcycle, or other piece of equipment up and down the Ramps can be strenuous and dangerous. This should only be done by individuals who are physically able to handle the demands of this task.
    17. Be aware that the connection of the up-per lip of each Ramp to the vehicle's tailgate or other vehicle component may cause damage to the paint finish of the vehicle.
    18. Adhere to all Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) requirements when using this product.
    19. Save packaging information, warnings and this manual. They contain important information and must always remain readable. Contact MAXXHAUL for replacements.
Keep in mind that the warnings previously discussed cannot cover all possible conditions or situations that could occur. It is important that the person setting up and using this product understand that common sense and caution are factors which cannot be built into this product, and must be supplied by the person(s) using this product.
  4. Setting Up and Using the Aluminum Ramp Kit
    1. Always wear ANSI approved safety googles when setting-up and using this product.
    2. Lay out the Ramps and note the design difference between the top and underside of each Ramp - see photos below.
    3. The hardwood planks will be bolted to the Ramps as shown below.
    4. Planks: When choosing what type of plank (purchased separately) is to be attached to each Ramp, several things must be considered:
Plank composition: Planks should be made of Douglas Fur or Oak solid wood. Wood must be clean and free of knots. The planks should be 2 inch thick x 8 inch wide to fit perfectly with the design of the Ramps.
The length of the planks is dependent on the amount of vertical distance from the ground to the pickup truck's bed (or other raised object the equipment is to be rolled onto). Use the illustration and chart on the next page to determine the required length of each plank.

Determining Length of Planks

Height of Tailgate off ground Recommended Length of each Plank
14" or less 4 Ft.-6 Inches (54")
15" to 18" 5 Ft.-10" (70")
19" to 24" 7 Ft.-10" (94")
25" to 28" 9 Ft. (108")
29" to 32" 10 Ft.-6" (126")

Attaching planks to a tailgate height above 32" is considered dangerous, and not recommended, due to the slope and required length of the planks.
