  • Page 8: Position And Heading

Position and Heading When the two CAT MAX units are paired, they should be placed outside with a clear view to the sky. Again… Location is key!!! A clear view to the sky means that there should be no obstructions above the GNSS antenna which is located on the top of the unit just below the cover.
  • Page 9: Position Quality

Position quality The sensor view in SafePilot gives valuable information about the quality of the position, speed, and heading. Tab on the quality indicator in the upper left corner and you will get access to the sensor view. The GPS details gives you an indication if the POS unit is placed at a good location or if it should be placed with a better view to the sky.
  • Page 10: Heading Quality

Heading quality Tab on the quality indicator in the upper left corner and select the CAT MAX HEADING. The GPS details gives you a good indication if the HDT unit is placed at a good location or if it should be placed with a better view to the sky. Rules of thumb is: More than 10 satellites should be in view.
  • Page 11: Pilot Plug Mode

Pilot plug mode If it is a big problem to locate a suitable location for both the CAT MAX POS and HDT there is an option to connect the CAT MAX HDT to the pilot plug. This way SafePilot will get heading from the ships AIS transponder and also the AIS targets will be received this way.
  • Page 12: Mounting

Mounting When you look for the location you have the option to place the CAT MAX on a horizontal surface or on a railing. The CAT MAX has got very strong magnets on the bottom which will make it stick very hard to any surface of metal.
  • Page 13: Good And Bad Locations

Good and bad locations A lot has been said about where to place the CAT MAX units on the vessel, let us see some examples. Optimal. Bad because of the vertical wall next to the unit. A very large part of the sky is blocked and the Bad because the wheelhouse is too close and wall close by will cause multipath.
  • Page 14 Bad because pipes are next to and above CAT Bad because antennas block large part of the MAX. sky and they might transmit high power. Good location. The only obstruction is the Perfect… panama roof but it is relatively far away from the CAT MAX and the top is plastic.

  • Page 16: Dukc

DUKC The CAT MAX system can provide measurements used for computing the under-keel clearance while underway. The DUKC is an option that has to be procured and further more a RTK reference station is needed in order to get the height. The system will give position, height (Requires RTK), heading, roll and pitch which all are used to calculate the least under keel clearance on the vessel.
  • Page 17: Charging

Charging The SafePilot CAT MAX has got two charging options, cable or wireless. Cable charging: IMPORTANT! SafePilot CAT ROT/I/MAX charger compatibility Use only chargers which are USB 2 and/or Quick Charge 1.0 compatible. Quick Charge 2.0 and onwards may damage the internal charging circuitry in the SafePilot hardware.
  • Page 18 Wireless charging: The SafePilot CAT MAX supports the wireless Qi standard which is common for Apple products. Place the CAT MAX on the wireless charger. The LED on the power button will light up red and start flashing as the charging starts. Once the unit is fully charged the LED will light up with a constant red color.
  • Page 19: Auto Power Off

Auto power off This feature is implemented to preserve battery when the system is not in use. The feature can be disabled/enabled through SafePilot. A CAT MAX Unit will turn itself off, under certain conditions. If either of these conditions are met, the unit will turn itself off, even if it is connected to a Pilot Plug or a charger.
