The sensing head uses the MODBUS as its communication protocol. The ST450EC sensing head is supplied with an Ex d/Ex t enclosure and includes an Ex d/Ex t certified cable gland. The Ex d/Ex t sensor of the gas detector is replaceable and is available for numerous toxic gasses and Oxygen.
  • Page 6: Measuring Principle

1.1 Measuring principle The ST450EC sensing head is available in several versions for the detection of numerous gases with different gas concentrations. The sensing head features an electrochemical gas sensor using 2 or 3 electrodes (depending on the gas type).
  • Page 7: Installation

    2. INSTALLATION 2.1 Installation and mounting During the installation of the ST450EC sensing head, one should comply with the regulations and practices of the country concerned. The following general rules should be taken into account: 1. The sensing head should be installed in an area that is free from shocks or vibrations.
  • Page 8 ST450EC should be installed with an appropriate amount of distance from radio transmission equipment or similar devices. During installation the ST450EC should be isolated from local ground. The unit should only be connected to ground through the screening of the connection cable (see chapter 2.2 - Cable requirements and cable installation).
  • Page 9: Cable Requirements And Cable Installation

2.2 Cable requirements and cable installation The signal cable for the ST450EC should be a 2-core cable (flexible) with a tinned copper braid (at least 80% optical coverage) with a core diameter of 0.75 – 2.5mm The cable should feature a suitable isolation that meets industrial standards and could withstand severe weather and industrial conditions.
  • Page 10: Maximum Cable Length

The maximum cable length depends on the input impedance of the system that is connected with the ST450EC. The sum of the cable resistance and the input impedance results in the total load resistance and should not exceed 300 Ω.
  • Page 11: Electrical Connection

2.5 Electrical connection For the connection of the ST450EC, the cable must be inserted in the proper manner. (See chapter 2.2 - Cable requirements and cable installation). The signal must be connected to the power supply and the signal output of the sensing head. These connections are available on connector CON1 (see wiring diagram).

Use the ground connection of the gas detection system as start point grounded to earth.  Mount the ST450EC on a non-conductive structure or base.  Use an isolator when mounting on a conductive surface (like a steel I-profile, aluminium panel or swallow plate) to avoid connection to local electrical ground.
  • Page 14: Operation

    3. OPERATION After connecting the ST450EC the gas detector is ready for use. Depending on the supplied version, the sensing head is suitable for the detection of toxic gasses or Oxygen. Newly supplied sensing heads are always calibrated. The calibration (target) gas and the measurement range of the sensing head are indicated on the type label.
  • Page 15: Functions

3.1 Functions Output signal Each ST450EC sensing head is supplied with a transmitter PCB with a 4-20mA interface. This transmitter PCB converts the sensor signal to an analogue 4-20mA signal. The sensing head has a number of predefined output levels.
