66 Chapter 3: Adding devices to the Matrox 4Sight X motherboard
Important
The voltages that can be drawn from the 4-pin power supply connectors on the
motherboard are outlined in the Power supply section of Appendix B: Technical
reference. If the mass storage devices that you are connecting require more power
than the unit can supply (as shown in the Power supply section), use an external
power supply. If you do not, you will risk damaging the motherboard.

Drive assignments

By default, if a mass storage device is attached to one of the 7-pin SATA connectors,
it is automatically identified as the primary IDE master by the BIOS. Similarly,
when a second mass storage device is attached to the other 7-pin SATA connector,
it will be identified as the secondary IDE master by the BIOS. Run the BIOS Setup
program to verify your devices' configurations.
Primary and secondary designations are used simply to differentiate between the
two mass storage devices connected to the motherboard. There is no difference in
performance between the primary or secondary device. For more information,
refer to your device's documentation.

Connecting USB devices

The Matrox 4Sight X motherboard provides two USB connectors and one USB
header for USB devices.
The two USB connectors can be used to attach two USB devices.
The USB header can be used to connect either of the following:
• One 10-pin USB flash module (the USB flash module must have a 10-pin female
connector).
• Two USB (4-pin) devices.

Connecting a fan

The Matrox 4Sight X motherboard provides two 4-pin power supplies for cooling
fans. For more information on positioning the fan(s) in the chassis, see the Custom
fan section, in Chapter 4: Installing the Matrox 4Sight X motherboard in a custom
chassis.
