REFERENCE
EMS Expanded Memory can only be used by
programs that support this standard, such as
Symphony, Framework, and the Orchid
Productivity Software.
If you have no other programs that support
EMS, all of it can be used for the- Orchid
Productivity Software. (You will mainly be
concerned with allocating EMS Memory to RAM
Disks, since Print Spooling uses only DOS
Memory and Disk Caching automatically uses
any of the host's memory that is available.)
If you will be using an application program
that supports EMS, decide how much EMS memory
to allocate to RAM Disks and how much to leave
for the application program.
The host's Protected Memory can be used for
caching and RAM disks, but it cannot be used
by other software running under PC-DOS or
MS-DOS. If you have application programs that
can use EMS Memory and you need all of the EMS
you have available, you may wish to use
Protected Memory for caching and RAM disks.
Even when Productivity Software is placed in
Protected or EMS Expanded Memory, it still
uses some DOS Memory. For example, a cache
bufferof8 megabytes requires approximately
150 kilobytes of DOS Memory for the program
and information about the buffer. Remember to
account for this when allocating DOS Memory.
