TYPES OF MEMORY
To understand the Turbo, it is helpful to know
the types of memory available in your system.
Memory is organized as follows:
The first 640 kilobytes (the memory between
the addresses OK and 640K) is called
DOS Memory because it is compatible with
PC-DOS and MS-DOS. Some systems, like the
AT, have memory above I megabyte, called
Protected Memory.
o
Protected Memory is frequently referred
to as Extended Memory, but this manual
will use the term Protected Memory.
The DOS memory between 640K and 704K (64
\-./
kilobytes) can be used as DOS memory if the
jD=704 flag is specified in the Turbo command.
This is provided as an option because certain
DOS programs will not operate correctly in a
system with more than 640 kilobytes.
DOS Memory can be used by your existing
programs running under DOS. Protected memory
can be used by software written specifically
for AT-compatible systems using 80286.
