Suiting Colors to a Workfl ow: Color Mode
The D70S offers a choice of color modes, which determine the gamut of col-
ors available for color reproduction. Choose a color mode according to how
pho to graphs will be pro cessed on leaving the cam era.
Option
Ia (sRGB)
(default)
II (Adobe RGB)
IIIa (sRGB)
Color Mode
Modes Ia and IIIa are recommended for photographs that will be printed without
modifi cation or viewed in applications that do not support color management, and
for photographs that will be printed with ExifPrint, the direct printing option on some
household printers, or kiosk printing or other commercial print services. Photos taken
in Mode II can also be printed using these options, but colors will not be as vivid.
JPEG photographs taken in Mode II are Exif 2.21 and DCF 2.0 compliant; applications
and printers that support Exif 2.21 and DCF 2.0 will select the correct color space au-
tomatically. If the application or device does not support Exif 2.21 and DCF 2.0, select
the appropriate color space manually. For more information, see the documentation
provided with the application or device.
Nikon Software
For best results when viewing photographs on a computer, use PictureProject (sup-
plied) or Nikon Capture 4 version 4.2 or later (available separately). Nikon Capture,
which makes an excellent addition to any imaging workfl ow, is unique in its ability to
directly edit NEF fi les without affecting the image quality of the original, and belongs
at the fi rst stage of any production workfl ow involving image editing software. When
photographs created with the D70S are opened in PictureProject or Nikon Cap ture 4
version 4.2 or later, the ap pro pri ate color space will be selected automatically.
Choose for portrait shots that will be print ed or used "as is,"
with no fur ther modifi cation. Pho to graphs are adapted to
sRGB col or space.
Photographs taken at this setting are adapted to Adobe RGB
color space. This color space is capable of expressing wider
gamut of colors than sRGB, making it preferred choice for im-
ages that will be extensively processed or retouched.
Choose for nature or landscape shots that will be print ed or
used "as is," with no fur ther modifi cation. Pho to graphs are
adapt ed to sRGB col or space.
