Charging the Battery The KG-S74A features two charging options for the battery pack. It can be charged using the included desktop charger or the built-in USB-C port on the side of the radio.

Getting Started Charging with the Desktop Charger The KG-S74A includes an intelligent desktop charger. It can charge the battery pack with or without the radio attached. 1. Insert the AC plug into an available 100~240v outlet. The LED light on the charger base will flash red for 2-3 seconds.
Getting Started Charging with the USB-C Port The KG-S74A can charge the battery from the USB-C charging port on the side of the radio using an optional USB-C cable (not included). The battery pack can be fully charged with a USB cable connected to a USB to AC adapter plugged into an AC outlet or a to a USB port in a vehicle, power bank or computer.

Your First Transmit Selecting a Channel or Frequency When you power on your KG-S74A for the first time, the screen will likely display “118.000” in the center area. This is the current frequency. Turn the Channel Knob or the [UP] / [DOWN] keys to navigate through the list of frequencies.
In channel mode, frequencies that have been saved can be selected from the channel list. This is the most convenient way to access commonly used frequencies. The KG-S74A allows users to save up to 400 custom channels. In channel mode, turning the Channel/ Frequency Knob or pressing the [UP] / [DOWN] keys will tune to the next channel in the list.
Channel and Frequency modes. Channels The KG-S74A supports 400 customizable memory channels. Instructions for adding and deleting channels are located in the Advanced Operations section (page 53). The KG-S74A can only transmit and receive on frequencies in the aviation band.
Operation Channel Scan The KG-S74A has a channel scan feature. To activate Channel Scan, press and hold the [*SCN] key for two seconds or until you hear “Scan Begin”. The radio will scan each channel for activity, starting from the current channel. The Scan feature also works in Frequency Mode.
Operation Priority Channel Scan The KG-S74A supports Priority Channel Scanning. With this feature a priority chan- nel can be specified that is scanned much more frequently than other channels. This helps prevent missing all or part of a transmission when you are primarily concerned with a single channel.
Operation NOAA Weather Mode NOAA Weather Mode allows you to quickly access weather information from a local NOAA broadcast station. To activate NOAA Weather Mode, press the appropriate PF key if one has been as- signed to the WEATHER function. The display will change to show a NOAA broad- cast station frequency starting with 162 MHz and a rain cloud icon will appear above it to indicate the radio is in Weather Mode.

The KG-S74A features a Weather Alert option (page 43). When Weather Alert mode is active and the radio is in standby mode, the KG-S74A will monitor the cur- rently selected weather channel for an alert tone (1050Hz) that indicates a weather warning or alert has been issued.

Channel Knob. Key Lock The buttons on the KG-S74A can be locked to prevent them from being accidentally pressed. Operation Recall This function returns to the previously tuned frequency or channel. Frequencies or channels tuned for more than 5 seconds will be activated as the next RECALL fre- quency. When the RECALL option is pressed, the radio will go to the RECALL channel or frequency and set the new RECALL channel/frequency to the previously active channel.
Operation Stopwatch Timer The KG-S74A has a built-in stopwatch timer. It can be enabled using the TIMER menu option (page 47). Once enabled, Press [#LOCK] on the radio to activate the stopwatch. Press any key or turn the channel knob to stop the timer. When stopped, press [#LOCK] to clear and restart the timer, or press any key to deactivate the stop- watch and return to standby mode.
Menu Functions Menu Functions [01: SQUELCH] Squelch Function: The squelch function mutes the speaker when no signal is detected. Adjusting the squelch sensitivity allows you to control how strong of a signal is required in order to unmute the speaker. Selecting a lower number will allow weaker signals to be heard, higher numbers require a stronger signal.

Advanced Operation Adding and Removing Channels The KG-S74A allows you to add and delete channels directly from the keypad of the radio using the CH-ADD and CH-DEL options in the menu. New channels can be created from scratch in Frequency mode or cloned from existing channels in Channel mode.

Troubleshooting Troubleshooting Before assuming your KG-S74A is defective, please check the following list of possi- ble problems and solutions. The RESET option provided in the menu can be used to restore factory standard settings and programming, and will often solve issues.
