Introduction
RS stock no. 215-167 has been produced for connecting portable
computers directly to a portable printer, such as the Canon BJ-20
Bubblejet printer.
RS stock no. 215-167 is a portable serial to parallel converter that
combines ease of use with low operating cost.
Easy To Use - No switches and standard connections ensure quick and
simple installation.
Low Operating Cost - Controlled by your printer giving long battery life.
Battery Types
The converter uses a standard 9 volt PP3 type battery. For increased
battery life, the use of an alkaline battery is recommended (RS stock
no. 394-9059). Suitable rechargeable batteries may also be used ( RS
stock no. 217-3813).
Battery Installation And Replacement
To insert a new battery, slide back the cover of the battery compartment
and withdraw the battery and lead.
battery terminals ensuring a firm fit. Care should be taken not to
damage either the connector or the battery terminals. Slide the battery
into the battery compartment with the connector towards the cover.
Slide the cover back to close.
The converter should give up to 250 hours service before the battery
requires replacement, depending on the printer and battery type.
Indication of a low battery will be failure to obtain output from your
printer. A new battery should be fitted at this point.
Note: If the converter is not going to be used for long periods of time,
the battery should be removed to prevent possible leakage from
damaging the device.
WARNING
Leaking batteries must be handled with great care as the contents can
be harmful. Batteries must be disposed of in accordance with local
disposal legislation.
DO NOT MUTILATE, PUNCTURE OR DISPOSE OF BATTERIES BY

Connections
BEFORE MAKING ANY CONNECTIONS, PLEASE ENSURE THAT
THE COMPUTER AND THE PRINTER ARE SWITCHED OFF.
Use a suitable connecting lead between your computer serial port and
the converter. Connect the converter to the printer parallel port and
engage the spring clips over the lugs on the converter to ensure a firm
fit.
Once these connections described above have been made, the printer
may be switched on followed by the computer. At this point the printer
may print a single character. Do not worry, this is perfectly normal for
some printers.
To configure the system, refer to your computer and printer manuals.
Parameters given in the technical specification below should be set for
use with RS stock no. 215-167. Some of these parameters can be set
under MS-DOS and form part of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Others,
such as printer type, can usually be set from within the software being
used.
Trouble Shooting
In the event that your printer fails to print once connected to the
computer via the converter, you should check the following:
1. Are the connections correct?
Check that these are aligned correctly and are secure.
2. Are printer settings correct?
Check your computer and printer manuals and the settings given in
this guide.
3. Was the printer ON during connection of the converter?
Turn the printer OFF and wait about 5 seconds before turning it ON
again.
4. Is the computer port correctly addressed?
Check your computer manual for the serial port name (COM1 etc.).
5. Is the battery good?
Change the battery.
