18SP532—Install Follower Spring and Retainer Kit
23528939 on Series 50 or Series 60 Fuel Injector

Introduction

Follower spring and retainer kit 23528939 is intended for
installation on a Series 50 ® or Series 60
This kit consists of the items listed in Table 1.

Installation

The follower spring and retainer can be installed without
removing the fuel injector from the cylinder head. Install kit
components as follows:
CAUTION:
To avoid injury from accidental engine start-up while
servicing the engine, disconnect/disable the starting system.
1. With the engine at ambient temperature (cool to the
touch) and the starting system disconnected/
disabled, refer to the Series 50 Service Manual (6SE50) or
the Series 60 Service Manual (6SE483) and remove the
engine rocker cover. Remove the rocker arm shaft
assembly and place on a clean cloth or paper towels to
avoid contamination or damage.
NOTICE:
DDC recommends replacing one spring at a time to avoid
mixing injector plungers. Each plunger is matched to its
individual body and is not interchangeable with another
plunger. Mixing plungers and bodies may lead to injector
seizure.
2. Using a 5 mm hex head driver, remove the two injector
follower retainer screws. Discard screws and follower
retainer.

NOTICE:
Use extra care when handling the plunger, since any damage to
the surface of the plunger could lead to injector seizure and/or
oil dilution caused by a leaky injector.
3. Carefully lift the follower from the injector by pulling
straight up. The plunger will be loosely attached to the
follower. See Figure 1.
4. Remove the plunger from the follower and place on a
clean cloth or paper towel to avoid damage.
5. Remove the follower spring from the injector and install
the new spring.
NOTE:
The new spring is 11mm longer than the former spring, and
the new follower retainer is also longer. Former follower
retainers and springs are not interchangeable with the new
components and must be discarded.
6. Wash the plunger carefully with clean diesel fuel,
WD-40 , or an alcohol-base cleaner. The plunger must be

thoroughly clean to eliminate any contamination that could
lead to injector seizure. Clean the follower, as well.
7. Lubricate the plunger with clean diesel fuel, reattach it to
the follower and carefully install into the injector. See
Figure 2.
8. Using the screws provided in the kit, install the new
follower retainer onto the injector. Torque screws
2.5 - 2.8 N•m (22.0 - 25.0 lb-in).
9. Refer to the service manual and install the rocker arm
shaft assembly and rocker cover. Complete engine
reassembly.
NOTE:
The new follower clip is longer and will interfere with the
Pacbrake ® socket-head screw used to retain the slave
piston bridge. A service kit has been developed by
Pacbrake to eliminate this interference. Consult your
Pacbrake dealer for this kit.
10. Reconnect starting power, start the engine and check
for proper operation.
