For optimum use of the BJC-5000 Series printer, be sure to install
both cartridges.
If you install the BC-23 Enhanced Black BJ Cartridge in Holder 1,
the printer will print black only regardless of the cartridge in Holder 2.
You always install the optional BC-22e Photo BJ Cartridge in
Holder 2 with the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge in Holder 1.
When printing on tabloid paper (11 17 in), the printer uses both
cartridges if you have the same type of cartridge in each holder (for
example, you have a BC-21e in both Holder 1 and Holder 2). If you
have two different types of cartridges installed, the printer uses only
the cartridge in Holder 1.

Replacing BJ Cartridges and BJ Tanks

The actual amount of ink that you use will vary depending on the print
density of a page. If the majority of your output is graphics, you may
need to change cartridges or tanks more often than when you are
printing text only. See BJ Cartridges in Appendix A (page A-4) for details
on the expected yield of the BJ cartridges.
You may need to replace a BJ cartridge or a BJ tank when either of these
conditions exists:
You have been using the cartridge for more than six months.
Your printed output is not crisp and clear, and there are gaps in the
characters (missing dots) even after you have aligned the print head
and performed print head cleaning several times.
If you are using the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge and either your color or
black output is blank, one of the BJ tanks is probably out of ink. See the
instructions starting on page 4-16 for replacing a BJ tank.
