Section 2 • SAFETY Never operate equipment while under the influ- ence of any substance which could impair oper- ator ability or judgement. This presents a safety hazard in the work place. Always use employer approved grounding pro- cedures when operating the machine. Do not operate equipment if work ability is impaired by fatigue, illness, or other causes.
Section 2 • SAFETY EMPLOYER SAFETY REQUIREMENTS This guideline is intended to assist owners/ employers to ensure equipment is serviced and The employer shall provide training and instruc- operated in a safe manner. Section 3 • OPERATION 8) Payout Brake Control (Decrease/Increase) 5) Reel Speed and Direction Control There are four control handles with gauges. Each This control lever determines the direction the reel payout brake can be individually set to the reel will rotate and at what speed from slow to amount of tension or drag desired.

Section 3 • OPERATION NOTE 11) Oil Pressure Gauge This gauge displays the engine oil lubricating sys- tem pressure in pounds per square inch (PSI). It This is a fine speed adjustment knob. Rotate should be checked frequently to ensure the system clockwise to decrease engine speed, counter- is functioning and there is adequate oil in the clockwise to increase engine speed.

Section 3 • OPERATION REEL DRIVE COUPLING SHIFTER Each reel has a coupling shifter to engage and disengage the reel. The shifter is located on the outside of the machine near the payout brake disc. Each lever is secured by a spring loaded locking pin.
Section 3 • OPERATION EMERGENCY/PARKING BRAKE G The brake is spring applied and released by Emergency Brake Lever hydraulic pressure. The brake holds the gear- box input shaft which is common to all reels through the gearbox, chain, sprockets and reel shafts.
Section 3 • OPERATION PULLING G Position the puller in a suitable location. G Always anchor the When pulling overhead the puller should be machine to prevent approximately three times the distance of the it from moving or first structure/pole height. shifting during the pulling sequence.

Section 3 • OPERATION G To engage the drive coupling, pull up on the Reel Speed locking pin. Pull up on the locking pin to Direction System Pressure Control Control release. For pulling, position the coupling shifter in to engage; For pay out or free turn, position the coupling shifter out to disengage.

Section 3 • OPERATION G As the pulling rope fills the reel, it will be necessary to increase the pressure. When the reel speed slows slightly, rotate the System Pressure Control knob clockwise one-half to one revolution. G By following this procedure at all times, the maximum obtainable pressure will only be slightly greater than required to pull the rope.
Section 3 • OPERATION LEVEL WINDING The level wind needs to be operated in conjunc- tion with the pulling speed control to guide the pulling line onto the reel as evenly as possible, NOTE avoiding a build-up at any point on the reel. As the pulling reel fills or slows, rotate the sys- tem pressure knob to increase one full turn.
Section 3 • OPERATION JUMP STARTING G Use only a vehicle with a negative ground electrical system and with the same voltage. Make certain that the jump starting vehicle has a battery or batteries of the same size or larger than supplied with the unit. Do not attempt to jump start if battery fluid is frozen or slushy.
Section 4 • SERVICE GENERAL SERVICE IMPORTANT INFORMATION WARNING The service guidelines outlined in this manual are effective methods. These guidelines are not all inclusive. Anyone who performs service or repair on a Sherman & Reilly machine must be completely satisfied that no one’s safety will be jeopardized and take responsibility for these actions.
Section 4 • SERVICE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS NOTE When the hydraulic system has a problem or is opened at any point, filters and fluid should be replaced to prevent contamination or damage to the system. G Take all fire prevention safety measures before using a welder or cutting device, including grinders.
Section 4 • SERVICE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM G Adding Hydraulic Oil Absolute cleanliness of the hydraulic system is a must! The smallest amount of foreign material in Wipe all dirt and grime from around reservoir the system can cause extensive damage to the filler cap before removing.
Section 4 • SERVICE SERVICE REQUIREMENTS G Hydraulic fluid reservoir level. DAILY G Engine oil level. G Hydraulic fluid filter condition. NOTE G Engine coolant level. CAUTION There is a gauge on the filter which indicates the service- Never add ETHER to fuel to start cold ability of the filter.
Section 4 • SERVICE SERVICE REQUIREMENTS SEMI-ANNUAL OR EVERY 100 HOURS OF SERVICE G Replace the hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic system. G Replace the oil filter. G Inspect trailer brake linings for wear and replace as necessary. G In extremely dirty or dusty conditions, filter and fluid should be changed every 50 hours of service, or every six months.
