Starter Motor Solenoid Test

1. Prepare machine for service. See "Prepare
Equipment for Service" on page 1-13.
2. Disconnect electrical connector and battery cable.
3. Remove starter motor solenoid.
4. Set multimeter to ohms.

5. Connect the red lead from the meter to the to blade
terminal.
6. Connect the black lead from the meter to the ground
stud. If no continuity is shown, replace solenoid.

7. Connect the red lead from the meter to the to battery
stud.
8. Connect the black lead from the meter to the ground
stud. If continuity is shown, replace solenoid.
Z400 Series
9. Ground solenoid at ground stud.
10. Apply voltage to blade terminal.
11. Connect the red lead from the meter to the battery
stud.
12. Connect the black lead from the meter to the ground
stud. If no continuity is shown, replace solenoid.

Stator Output Test

1. Prepare machine for service. See "Prepare
Equipment for Service" on page 1-13.
2. Disconnect stator electrical connector.
3. Set multimeter to AC volts.
4. Connect meter lead to electrical connector terminal

5. Connect other meter lead to electrical connector
terminal 2.
6. Start engine.
7. With engine at full throttle, stator output should be at
least 28 volts.
