The Plus and Minus
lights
reflect the absence
or
presence of a flag over the digit transmitted to the
units position. A
II four digits must be addressed
when-
ever
the 1715 is
operated, starting
with the thousands
position and proceeding in
sequence
to the units posi-
tion
.
Address ing

The four digits
are
not displayed until the units position is
addressed
and
they remain displa yed until the unit
is
reset by

tering

position which uses the Hag bit to represent the
sign.
Check
Light. Each digit
sent
to the display unit is
checked
for
parity.
A
parity
error
in anyone digit
turns
the
Check light on,
resets the
four
display positions to
blank,
and
turns on the
SlOe
Output
Error
indicator
.
Power On
/
Off
Switch
.
This
sw itch
is used
to
control
electrical power to the unit. When power is
on,
either
the Plus
or
Minus
light
is
on.
Display
Lights.
The display lights may be
easily
re-
placed from the front panel.

1717 Output Printer is

1710 Con trol System through the 1716
Output Printer Control
and
Power Units
and
the
Serial
Input/Output Channel. It fills the need for
output
information from the 1710 Control System to remote

the
process where
it is most
vitally
needed

or
to
other locations such as
the
superintendent's office.
Description
The
IBM
1717 Output Printer is
a
modified mod
el
B
IBM
electric typewriter. The standard
ma chin

rriage, medium platen,
and red and
bl ack
ribbon
shift. The standard
type is Manifold
No.
10,
which prints ten characters to the in ch.
The standard
character set
includes
A-Z,
0-9,
a
nd
the special characters

alphabeti

characters
print
as capitals and a
ll
print-
ing
is done in
the lower-case
position,
so
that
carriage
sh ifting
is flat
required.
The
power
a
nd
co
ntrol circuits for the Output
Printer
are

Output Printer
Control
and Power Units,
which are
mounted in two
standard relay
rack drawers
for
installation in
appro-
priate
loca
tions in the process. Protective housings
are
available
for the
control
a
nd
power
units when
relay
rack mounting is not
feasible. Fuses and
lights
on
th
e
front
of
the
power
unit
ca
n be
eas
il
y
replaced
without
removing
the
cover.
The printer is
connected to
the
control
unit by
an 8-foot cable
which permits the
printer to be placed
on a convenient
table
or
desk. Out-
put Printers
and
control units
ca
n
be
disconn ected
for
off-line servicing from
the
Serial
Input
/
Output
Chan-
nel without
affect ing
the
operation of other
units
o
n
the
channel.
