    WARNING Never modify or repair the seatbelts your- self. Contact an authorised Volvo work- shop. If a seatbelt has been subjected to a major load, such as in conjunction with a collision, the entire seatbelt must be replaced.
  • Page 14 Seatbelts and pregnancy The seatbelt should always be worn during pregnancy. But it is crucial that it be worn in the correct way. The diagonal section should wrap over the shoulder then be routed be- tween the breasts and to the side of the ab- domen.
  • Page 15 The symbol indicates a fault in the seatbelt buckle, SIPS, IC system or other fault in the SRS system. Contact an authorised Volvo workshop urgently.

Safety in the passenger compartment Driver airbag The car has an SRS airbag (Supplemental Restraint System) in the steering wheel to supplement the protection afforded by the seatbelt.
  • Page 17 01 Safety Safety in the passenger compartment WARNING Never place a child in a child seat or on a booster cushion in the front seat if the air- bag (SRS) is activated. Never allow a child to stand or sit in front of the front passenger seat.
  • Page 18 The switch is located on the passenger end of the dashboard and is accessible when the passenger door is open. Check that the switch is in the required position. Volvo rec- ommends that the key blade be used to change position. For information on the key blade, see page 37.

  • Page 21 Do not screw or install anything onto the car’s headlining, door pillars or side panels. This could compromise the intended pro- tection. Only ever use Volvo genuine parts that are approved for placement in these ar- eas.

    Child seats Volvo has child safety products that are de- signed for and tested by Volvo. When using other child safety products it is important to read the installation instructions included with the product.

    Loss of a remote control key If you lose a remote control key, take the oth- er remote control keys to an authorised Volvo workshop. The code of the missing remote control key must be erased from the system as a theft prevention measure.

    02 Locks and alarm Locks Locking and unlocking From the outside The remote control key locks/unlocks all doors and the boot lid simultaneously. The lock buttons and inside handles of the doors are disengaged during locking The fuel filler flap can be opened when the car is unlocked.
  • Page 44 Glovebox Unlock the glovebox by turning the key a quarter of a turn (90 degrees) anticlock- wise. The keyhole is vertical in the un- locked position. Lock the glovebox by turning the key a quarter of a turn (90 degrees) clockwise. The keyhole is horizontal in the locked position.

Prise off the plug covering the keyhole. Unlock the boot lid by turning the key blade one half turn anticlockwise as illustrated.

The information is shown with text and sym- bols. There are further descriptions under the functions that use the information displays.

    03 Your driving environment Seats Front seats Lumbar support, turn the wheel Forward/backward: lift the handle to ad- just the distance to the steering wheel and pedals. Check that the seat is locked after changing position. Raise/lower front edge of seat cushion, pump up/down.
  • Page 62 Preparations The seats can be adjusted for a certain time after unlocking the door with the remote con- trol key without the key in the ignition switch. Seat adjustment is normally made when the ignition is on and can always be made when the engine is running.

Restarting to reach the seat position stored in the key memory is performed by pressing the unlock button on the remote control key. In this situation the driver’s door must be open.

    03 Your driving environment Gearboxes Manual gearbox Depress the clutch pedal fully during each gear change. Take your foot off the clutch pedal between gear changes. Follow the shifting pattern indicated. For the best possible fuel economy, use the highest gear possible as often as possible. Reverse gear inhibitor Only engage reverse gear when the car is stationary.
  • Page 86 Reverse ( R ) The car must be stationary when position R is selected. Neutral position ( N ) No gear is engaged and the engine can be started. Apply the parking brake if the car is stationary with the gear selector in position Drive ( D ) D is the normal driving position.

To be able to move the gear selector from N to another gear position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition must be in position II, see page 81.

    General The car is equipped with two brake circuits. If one brake circuit is damaged then this will mean that the brakes engage at a deeper lev- el and harder pressure on the pedal is need- ed to produce the normal braking effect. The driver’s brake pedal pressure is rein- forced by a brake servo.
  • Page 89 If the level in the brake fluid reservoir is nor- mal at this stage, drive carefully to the near- est authorised Volvo workshop and have the brake system checked. If the brake fluid is under the MIN level in the brake fluid reservoir, do not drive further be- fore topping up the brake fluid.

  • Page 210 Fuel economy, ECO pressure At speeds under 160 km/h, the general tyre pressure for full load is recommended in or- der to obtain optimum fuel economy. Checking the tyre pressure The tyre pressures must be checked every month. This also applies to the car’s spare wheel.

    Exterior plastic parts A special cleaning agent available at Volvo dealers is recommended when cleaning ex- terior plastic parts that are not colour coordi- nated. Never use strong stain removers.
  • Page 212 Wash and dry the car thoroughly before you begin polishing or waxing. Clean off asphalt and tar stains using Volvo tar remover or white spirit. More stubborn marks can be re- moved using fine rubbing paste designed for car paintwork.
