5.2.2 Paper Feed Motor Backlash Adjustment

This adjustment sets the correct backlash (spacing) between the
paper feed motor and paper feed roller gear; it ensures proper paper
feeding and print accuracy.
Make this adjustment whenever you remove or replace any of the
following parts:
! Paper feed motor
! Gear 76 (paper feed roller gear)
! Paper feed roller
C A U T I O N
In the following steps, exercise extreme care to avoid
damaging the encoder wheel (clear plastic disk). Avoid
handling it to prevent contamination with dirt or grease.
1. Make sure the combination gear shown below is removed. If not,
remove the clip securing the gear, then remove the gear.

2. Loosen the screw shown below by one-half turn.

3. Press the PF motor gear against Gear 76 to make the two gears
mesh, as shown above. The gears should touch lightly, with no
obvious gaps or spaces between the teeth.
4. Re-tighten the screw that holds the motor in place.
5. As a test, press against Gear 76 at point 1 shown above and
release it. The gear should return to its original position. If it
doesn't, the gears are too tight.
