10. If you are instructed to return the microprocessor, follow all packaging
Installing a microprocessor and heat sink
The following procedure is for a field replaceable unit (FRU). FRUs must be
installed only by trained service technicians.
About this task
Read the documentation that comes with the microprocessor to determine whether
you must update the IBM System x Server Firmware. To download the most
current level of server firmware, complete the following steps:
1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.
2. Under Product support, click System x.
3. Under Popular links, click Software and device drivers.
4. Click System x3650 M2 to display the matrix of downloadable files for the

6. Lift the heat sink out of the server. If the heat sink sticks to the
microprocessor, slightly twist the heat sink back and forth to break the seal.
After removal, place the heat sink on its side on a clean, flat surface.
7. Release the microprocessor retention latch by pressing down on the end,
moving it to the side, and releasing it to the open (up) position. See Figure 40.

Note: The retention latch is under tension and care should be taken when
unlatching and latching the retention latch.
8. Open the microprocessor bracket frame by lifting up the tab on the top edge.
Keep the bracket frame in the open position.
9. Carefully lift the microprocessor straight up and out of the socket, and place it
on a static-protective surface.
