    Playable Discs This Player will play Digital Video Discs (DVDs), Video Compact Discs (VCDs), Super Video CDs, Audio CDs, and Super Audio CDs. This Player also will play MP3 files (music tracks compressed with MPEG Audio Layer 3 technology) recorded onto a Compact Disc Recordable (CD-R) or a Compact Disc Rewritable (CD-RW).

    Antenna or Cable TV Signal Before you begin, make sure you have an RF modulator and extra RF coaxial cables. These are not supplied with the Player, but are available from Philips or most con- sumer electronics retailers. Connect the supplied video cable (which has yellow ends) to the Player’s yellow CVBS VIDEO OUT jack.

    DVD 795SA Many playback features and options are available on Discs. Familiarize yourself with the Player and its remote as described on pages 18-22. Then see pages 23 and following to try other features. Press STANDBY-ON y y to turn on the Player. The red Standby light will disappear from the front of the Player.

    18 Remote Control Buttons DIM Button Press repeatedly to adjust the bright- ness of the Player’s display panel. There are four levels of brightness from which to choose. DISC Button Press to select a Disc for playback. Number Buttons Press to select numbered items in a DVD Disc menu.

    STANDBY-ON y Button Press to turn the Player on or off. The Standby light is red when the Player is in Standby mode (power off). The light does not appear if the power is on. SACD, MULTI CH, PROGRESSIVE lights These lights appear if the corresponding feature is active.

    22 On-screen Symbols, Bit Rate Indicator On-Screen Symbols The following symbols appear in the top left corner of the TV screen when you activate a feature.     Title/Disc Menus Press DISC MENU. If the current Title of the current Disc has a menu, the Title menu will appear on the screen. Otherwise, the main DVD Disc menu will appear. The menu may list camera angles, spoken language and subtitle options, Chapters for the Title, or other Disc features.

    24 Forward and Reverse Searching, Slow Motion AUDIO CD VIDEO CD Forward and Reverse Searching On a DVD or Video CD, to search the Disc at four times the normal speed, press and hold H or G for about two seconds during playback. To search at 32 times the nor- mal speed, press and hold H or G again.

    Still Picture/Frame-by-Frame Playback, Time Search 25 VIDEO CD Still Picture/Frame-by-Frame Playback During playback, press PAUSE k on the remote control. A still picture will appear on the TV screen. To advance the still picture one frame at a time, press PAUSE k repeatedly.

    26 Zoom, Camera Angle VIDEO CD Zoom Zooming lets you enlarge the video image during playback and pan through the enlarged image. Press ZOOM during playback. a Zoom will be selected in the System Menu Bar. Within five seconds, press 8 or 9 to choose 1.33, 2 or 4.

    AUDIO CD VIDEO CD Repeat You may play a Chapter, Track, Title, or entire Disc repeatedly. During playback, press REPEAT repeatedly to choose a Repeat mode. To repeat the current Chapter/Track, press REPEAT once. REPEAT CHPT or REPEAT TRK will appear on the display panel.

    28 Audio Language, Subtitles Audio Language Some DVDs are recorded in different languages. You may be able to watch the same movie in French, Spanish, etc. The movie may have spe- cial audio features, such as a director’s commentary or music soundtrack. If these are available on the DVD, access the different languages or fea- tured soundtracks by following these steps.

    VIDEO CD AUDIO CD Scan Scanning plays the first 10 seconds of each Chapter/Track on the Disc. Press SCAN during playback. Starting at the beginning of the current Chapter/Track, the first 10 seconds of each Chapter/Track will play. SCAN will appear briefly on the Player’s display panel.

    Access Control limits viewing of Discs that exceed the limits you set. This feature will not limit viewing if the Disc manufacturer did not code the Disc. Philips cannot guarantee the availability of Access Control with all Discs, and therefore denies any liability associated with unintended watching of Discs.

    Play Once/Play Always With Play once or Play always, you can disable or enable viewing of a specific Disc. The Player memorizes settings for 120 Discs. When you select Play Always, the current Disc moves to the top of the list. When the list is full and you add a new Disc, the last Disc in the list will drop out of the list.
  • Page 32 32 Access Control (cont’d) Setting Parental Levels DVDs may contain alternative scenes that conform to the Parental Level, or movie rating, that you select. The Parental Level may apply to the complete Disc or to certain scenes on the Disc. Follow the steps below to set the Parental Level at which you want DVDs to play.

    Changing the Country If a DVD has Parental Level coding, the codings are applicable only for the country specified on the Disc. The DVD manufacturer sets these codings. For example, a DVD may be coded at Level 3 for the United States.

    34 Favorite Track Selection Favorite Track Selection (FTS) lets you play your favorite Tracks in the order you select. A Program can contain 100 Tracks from Super Audio CDs, Audio CDs, MP3 (files on CD-R or CD-RW), Video CDs, or Super Video CDs.

    AUDIO CD An Audio CD Favorite Track Selection (FTS) lets you play your favorite Tracks in the order you set. An FTS Program can contain 20 Tracks. Setting a Program Put an Audio CD in the Player. Press STOP C to stop playback if necessary.

    36 MP3 Playback MP3 is a compression method that makes digital music files up to 10 times smaller without losing significant sound quality. MP3 is common on the Internet, letting you transfer Tracks to your computer and onto a CD Recordable or CD Rewritable disc. Materials and equipment with which to make MP3 recordings are not supplied with this Player.

    There are three types of Super Audio CDs: single-layer, dual-layer, and hybrid. Each may contain two areas of recorded audio or sound modes: High Quality Stereo and High Quality Multi-channel. A single-layer SACD may contain both Stereo and Multi-channel. A dual layer SACD may contain both Stereo and Multi-channel, but twice the amount.

    38 Playback Control VIDEO CD Activating Playback Control (PBC) This feature is available only on Video CDs. The Video CD must be compatible with Playback Control. Check the Video CD case for details. Load a Video CD with PBC and press PLAY :. The Video CD will show instructions or options on the TV screen.

    TV System (NTSC/PAL) DVDs are recorded according to a color system, the most common of which are NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the most common in the United States. This Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL. Your TV also oper- ates according to a color system.

    40 Black Level Shift, Video Shift Black Level Shift If you set the Player to NTSC, adjust Black level shift to improve the color contrast during Disc playback. Black level shift has no effect if the Player is set to PAL. Press SYSTEM MENU.

    TV Shape You may set the Player to display the DVD picture in one of three for- mats: Letterbox, Pan & Scan, or Wide. The TV Shape you select must be available on the DVD. If not, TV Shape settings will not affect the picture. Press SYSTEM MENU.

    42 Clear Voice, Color Settings (Smart Picture) Clear Voice This feature enhances the dialog while playing DVDs recorded in 5.1 channel audio.     Digital Output Adjust Digital output if you used one of the Player’s DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks (COAXIAL or OPTICAL) to connect the Player to a Stereo. Press SYSTEM MENU. Press 9 repeatedly to select G, then press :. Digital output will be selected. Press :. Press 8 or 9 to select Off, PCM only, or All.

    44 Analog Output If you connected the Player’s red and white AUDIO OUT or FRONT MULTICHANNEL AUDIO OUT jacks to a Stereo as shown on page 13, or if you connected the Player to a six-channel Receiver as shown on page 15, choose a setting for Analog Output.

    The Player lets you adjust the speaker settings, volume balance, and delay time for your audio system. You only need to adjust the speaker settings if you used the Player’s MULTICHANNEL AUDIO OUT jacks to connect the Player to a six-channel Receiver (Dolby Digital or DTS) as shown on page 15.

    46 CD Upsampling, IntelliPlay CD Upsampling CD Upsampling lets you adjust your CD’s sampling rate to improve the sound. You can increase the sampling rate from the standard 44.1 kHz/16 bit to the higher rates of 88.2 kHz/24bits or176.4 kHz/24bits. Or, you can turn off this feature.

For example, perhaps lyrics are recorded on one chan- nel, while the music is on a separate channel. Set Karaoke to On so the multiple channels will mix together, allowing you to hear both the lyrics and the music together in normal stereo sound.
