Memory An area within the computer itself where
instructions and data are held. The two principal

kinds of memory are Read Only Memory (ROM)('

and Random Access Memory (RAM).
Menu A list of options appearing on the screen
from which the user may choose what operation he
wants the computer to perform.
Mouse A manually operated device which controls
the movements of the cursor on the screen.
MS-DOS The operating system used by the Xerox
PC, MS-DOS controls the system's most basic
operations (i.e., file management, loading and
execution of user programs, etc.)
Operating System The program that acts as an
interface between the computer and the computer
user. See MS-DOS.
Parallel Port The socket, or port, on the back of
the processor used to connect a parallel printer.

Processor The main unit of your system, the
processor contains the disk drives, the memory, and
the processor board.
Processor Board The main circuit board, which
is located beneath the bottom cover of the Xerox
PC.
Program
A set of instructions that tells the
computer how to receive, store, process and deliver
data. Some programs are designed to accomplish
very specific goals, such as balancing a checkbook.
Random Access Memory (RAM)
Temporary
memory located within the computer itself. You
may write into RAM as well as read from it, but
data will only remain in RAM as long as the
computer is turned on.
Read Only Memory (ROM) Permanent memory
stored in the computer at the time of manufacture.
You can read from but cannot write onto ROM.
