    C h a p t e r 2 : : B a s i c C o n n e c t i o n s This chapter describes how to connect ReplayTV to your TV and other devices, including your home network. You will find detailed connection options not found on the Quick Setup Guide.
  • Page 14 If your satellite receiver uses a 15-pin serial cable, you will need to use the 9-pin to 15-pin adapter to connect the satellite receiver to ReplayTV. If you have a satellite receiver that uses telephone cable in place of serial cable, you will need to use the RJH to 9-pin adapter to connect the satellite receiver to ReplayTV.

    C o n n e c t i n g R e p l a y T V t o a V C R Connect ReplayTV to a VCR if you want to watch or save your record- ings on videotape. Deleting recordings from the Replay Guide will pre- serve hard drive space.
  • Page 17 If the infrared detector on the unit is not labeled, follow these steps: Refer to the owner’s manual of your cable box or satellite receiver. It may be shown there. Look for an area of dark, nearly opaque plastic on the front of the unit. If you find this area, look closely into it.

    If you have a home network, you can connect ReplayTV to it using the ETHERNET connection. This connection will allow you to send recordings to other ReplayTV 4000 and 4500 users, watch shows recorded on another ReplayTV in your home, and transfer photos from your PC to ReplayTV.
  • Page 19 C o n n e c t i n g R e p l a y T V t o a C a b l e M o d e m Using a router to connect ReplayTV to your cable modem is recommended. The router will allow you to share your cable modem without needing additional IP addresses from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  • Page 20 If you are connecting ReplayTV directly to a hub or switch that is connected to your cable modem, you will need an IP address from your ISP for ReplayTV. Before setting up ReplayTV, you should verify with your ISP that a device like ReplayTV is supported. You may need to specify the IP address on ReplayTV.

  • Page 22 When you first go to the ReplayTV Internet Address Book, you are asked to open a port number on your router. This is only required if you will be sending recordings to other ReplayTVs. The port number must be associated with the IP address of ReplayTV.

    If your home network does not have a DHCP server (a router, for example), you will need to manually set the IP address on ReplayTV. You can use the network information from your computer to determine what the IP address should be. Following are steps to find this information for common computer systems.

    P a r e n t a l C o n t r o l Parental Control offers you the ability to block video and audio of live TV shows or recorded shows based on the show rating or content. In addition, it allows blocking of specific channels. Once you access Parental Control, a screen will be displayed where you will be able to create or edit your 4-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number).

    R e m o t e C o n t r o l S e t u p Follow these steps to program the remote control to operate your television. The ReplayTV remote will only control your TV’s power and volume. Even if your television is not listed, try the codes anyway. You should be able to turn your TV on and off when the correct code is used.

    To stop Frame Advance: Press PLAY to resume playback at normal speed. Press RETURN TO LIVE to return to the live broadcast. The Instant Replay feature lets you jump back seven seconds during a live or recorded show. It’s the perfect way to ensure you don’t miss a single word of dialogue in your favorite movie, or if you want to watch a great play over again at the touch of a button.

    If you set a Show-based channel to record all episodes, the oldest episode will be recycled to make room for a new episode when the channel is full. Guaranteed Theme-based channels are designed to hold a specific amount of programming (1/2 hour, 2 hours, etc.). Twenty-four hours after being recorded, the oldest program will be recycled to make room for a new program when the channel is full.

    If you ever wanted to watch TV without commercials, then COMMERCIAL ADVANCE is what you’ve been waiting for. COMMERCIAL ADVANCE is a feature that allows you to choose whether to skip most commercial messages dur- ing playback of recorded shows. Commercials are still recorded with COMMER- CIAL ADVANCE enabled, though you now have the choice to watch them or not—automatically.

    To switch between skipping and viewing commercials while watch- ing a show, press the button on the remote control. Keep in mind that the following still apply: Commercials will not be skipped during the first and last two min- utes when playing back a recorded show.     To transfer your photos to ReplayTV, simply copy your photos into the folders that you have created.
