    C h a p t e r 2 : : B a s i c C o n n e c t i o n s This chapter describes how to connect ReplayTV to your TV and other devices, including your home network. You will find detailed connection options not found on the Quick Setup Guide.
  • Page 14 If your satellite receiver uses a 15-pin serial cable, you will need to use the 9-pin to 15-pin adapter to connect the satellite receiver to ReplayTV. If you have a satellite receiver that uses telephone cable in place of serial cable, you will need to use the RJH to 9-pin adapter to connect the satellite receiver to ReplayTV.

I n c o r p o r a t i n g R e p l a y T V i n t o y o u r E n t e r t a i n m e n t S y s t e m ReplayTV controls and records the television signals you receive (satellite, cable, antenna, or a combination of all three).

    C o n n e c t i n g R e p l a y T V t o a V C R Connect ReplayTV to a VCR if you want to watch or save your record- ings on videotape. Deleting recordings from the Replay Guide will pre- serve hard drive space.
  • Page 17 If the infrared detector on the unit is not labeled, follow these steps: Refer to the owner’s manual of your cable box or satellite receiver. It may be shown there. Look for an area of dark, nearly opaque plastic on the front of the unit. If you find this area, look closely into it.

    If you have a home network, you can connect ReplayTV to it using the ETHERNET connection. This connection will allow you to send recordings to other ReplayTV 4000 and 4500 users, watch shows recorded on another ReplayTV in your home, and transfer photos from your PC to ReplayTV.
  • Page 19 C o n n e c t i n g R e p l a y T V t o a C a b l e M o d e m Using a router to connect ReplayTV to your cable modem is recommended. The router will allow you to share your cable modem without needing additional IP addresses from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  • Page 20 If you are connecting ReplayTV directly to a hub or switch that is connected to your cable modem, you will need an IP address from your ISP for ReplayTV. Before setting up ReplayTV, you should verify with your ISP that a device like ReplayTV is supported. You may need to specify the IP address on ReplayTV.

  • Page 22 When you first go to the ReplayTV Internet Address Book, you are asked to open a port number on your router. This is only required if you will be sending recordings to other ReplayTVs. The port number must be associated with the IP address of ReplayTV.

    If your home network does not have a DHCP server (a router, for example), you will need to manually set the IP address on ReplayTV. You can use the network information from your computer to determine what the IP address should be. Following are steps to find this information for common computer systems.

Channel Guide: The Channel Guide is ReplayTV’s on-screen program guide. The Channel Guide provides 12 days of current television listings for all of the TV channels you receive.

    You can also choose this option to change between use of a phone line and Ethernet connection. (For example, if you purchased your ReplayTV 4500 and use the telephone line to receive Channel Guide listings and then later add a broadband network to your home.) Choose Switch Connection from the Setup Summary screen if you switch from modem to Ethernet use.

    P a r e n t a l C o n t r o l Parental Control offers you the ability to block video and audio of live TV shows or recorded shows based on the show rating or content. In addition, it allows blocking of specific channels. Once you access Parental Control, a screen will be displayed where you will be able to create or edit your 4-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number).

    R e m o t e C o n t r o l S e t u p Follow these steps to program the remote control to operate your television. The ReplayTV remote will only control your TV’s power and volume. Even if your television is not listed, try the codes anyway. You should be able to turn your TV on and off when the correct code is used.

    : : C o n t r o l l i n g L i v e T e l e v i s i o n The moment you turn on ReplayTV and your TV, ReplayTV automatically begins recording and temporarily preserves the record- ing on its hard drive.

    To use Fast Forward while watching a show: Press FF (Fast Forward) for 1x fast forward. Press FF again for 2x fast forward. Press FF again for 4x fast forward. Press FF again for 16x fast forward. Press FF again for 20x fast forward. Press PLAY, STOP, or REW (Rewind) to stop fast forwarding.

    To stop Frame Advance: Press PLAY to resume playback at normal speed. Press RETURN TO LIVE to return to the live broadcast. The Instant Replay feature lets you jump back seven seconds during a live or recorded show. It’s the perfect way to ensure you don’t miss a single word of dialogue in your favorite movie, or if you want to watch a great play over again at the touch of a button.

    S e t t i n g R e c o r d O p t i o n s There may be times when you want to adjust the Record Options for a specific show. For example, you might want to record action movies or sporting events at higher quality than television shows.

Find Shows is the perfect feature for those times when there is a show you want to record, but don’t know what time or channel it is on.     C a n c e l l i n g a R e c o r d i n g To cancel a recording before it starts: Press CHANNEL GUIDE on the ReplayTV remote. Highlight the show you want to cancel. You will know it’s set to record because at least one red dot will appear next to the show.

    R e s o l v i n g C o n f l i c t i n g R e c o r d i n g s ReplayTV allows you to choose what will be recorded when attempting to record a show at the same time as a previously scheduled recording.

    If you set a Show-based channel to record all episodes, the oldest episode will be recycled to make room for a new episode when the channel is full. Guaranteed Theme-based channels are designed to hold a specific amount of programming (1/2 hour, 2 hours, etc.). Twenty-four hours after being recorded, the oldest program will be recycled to make room for a new program when the channel is full.

    ReplayTV allows you to send recordings including shows you record and home videos – can send a recording to a maximum of 15 ReplayTVs.     If you ever wanted to watch TV without commercials, then COMMERCIAL ADVANCE is what you’ve been waiting for. COMMERCIAL ADVANCE is a feature that allows you to choose whether to skip most commercial messages dur- ing playback of recorded shows. Commercials are still recorded with COMMER- CIAL ADVANCE enabled, though you now have the choice to watch them or not—automatically.

    To switch between skipping and viewing commercials while watch- ing a show, press the button on the remote control. Keep in mind that the following still apply: Commercials will not be skipped during the first and last two min- utes when playing back a recorded show. Shows delayed within a few minutes of the live broadcast will not skip commercials.

    To transfer your photos to ReplayTV, simply copy your photos into the folders that you have created. Each folder (and its accompa- nying photos) is considered a separate slide show and can be named appropriately: for example, “Fishing” or “Vacation.” The slide show feature is controlled with the Photo Viewer, accessed from the Main Menu.
