How IP Addresses Work

To make internet addressing easier to understand, IP
addresses are written in dotted decimal notation, for
example:
191.0.0.72
(10111111.00000000.00000000.01001000 in binary)

Classes
Depending on the Class (or type) of the IP address,
there are many ways that the address field can be
divided into a network number and a device number.
The number used to convey how an IP address is
divided is determined by the most significant bits in
the 32-bit address field.
There are four classes of IP addresses. Each address
class begins with a unique bit pattern, which is used
by the Internet software residing on your devices to
identify the address class.
