    :: Welcome Thank you for purchasing the Rio Karma. Small and powerful, the Rio Karma can store thousands of tracks on its hard drive. The Rio Karma includes an AC adapter, earphones, a backlit LCD, a long lasting built-in battery, and a docking station that enables RCA, Ethernet, and USB 2.0 connectivity.

    The Rio Karma uses a built-in lithium-ion rechargable battery that lasts many hours per charge. Lithium-ion batteries drain at a very slow rate even when they are not being used. If you have not used your Rio Karma in a long period of time you will need to recharge the battery.

    USB port. When connected to a USB cable, the battery on the Rio Karma will drain faster than usual. To prevent battery drain, the AC adapter should be connected to the Rio Karma anytime it is connected to a USB cable for an extended amount of time.

    Chapter 3 :: Software Installation Follow these instructions to load software that enables a computer to recognize the Rio Karma. The installation also loads Rio Music Manager. Place the installation CD label-side up into the computer’s CD-ROM drive. The Rio installation software launches automatically.

    :: Copy Copying Tracks with Rio Music Manager Copying tracks from Audio CDs involves two steps commonly known as ripping and encoding. Ripping and encod- ing refers to the process of ripping (copying) audio from a CD and encoding (saving) the audio content into a com- pressed digital audio format like FLAC, MP3, OGG, or WMA.

    :: Transfer Rio Music Manager Transferring tracks from the PC to the Rio Karma with the Rio Music Manager involves selecting tracks and trans- ferring them to the player. Launch the Rio Music Manager. Click My Music in the left frame to access tracks. Rio Music Manager will scan the computer’s hard drives for digital audio tracks that are compatible with the Rio Karma.

    RealOne Player Loading tracks from the PC to the Rio Karma with the RealOne Player involves adding “clips” and transferring them onto the player. Launch RealOne Player. Connect the Rio Karma to the computer using the USB cable. Turn the Rio Karma on.

    Index :: Play The Rio Karma player can play audio tracks using a variety of playback formats. Any format can be used within a matter of seconds so you can spend more time enjoying tracks and less time arranging them.

    :: Artist To play tracks from a specific artist please follow these steps: Press MENU. Select Play Music. Select Artist. Select the first letter of the artist name. Select an artist. If present, select a single album or Play All Albums. Select a single track or Play All Tracks to begin playback.

    EQ Mode EQ Mode allows the player to switch between the standard Bass & Treble audio set- tings and advanced 5-Band Parametric audio settings. • Custom 1, Custom 2, Custom 3, and EQ Setup options are only available when the 5-Band Parametric mode has been selected. Custom 1, Custom 2, and Custom 3 Custom equalizer options function the same way as preset equalizer settings but are set according to personal preferences.

    Playback Various playback settings can be used to modify the way the Rio Karma plays tracks. Tracks can be shuffled at ran- dom, repeated continuously, or blended together to create seamless playback. Press MENU. Select Settings. Select Playback. Adjust Shuffle Mode, Repeat Mode, and/or Cross Fade settings.

    Play Screen When the Rio Karma is in playback mode, pressing RIOSTICK will cycle the display through various visualizations. Visualization and timer options can be set using the Play Screen menu. Press MENU. Select Settings. Select Play Screen. Adjust Current Track View, Timer Direction, and/or Timer Mode settings.

    Set the backlight on the player to shut itself off after a specific amount of time. Settings include Always Off (the default setting), 1 second, 2 Seconds, 5 Seconds, 10 Seconds, and Always On. • To conserve battery life, the Always On setting should only be used when the Rio Karma is connected to an AC adapter.

    Resume Use the options in the Resume menu to set the track that the player will play whenever the player restarts. Press MENU. Select Settings. Select Resume.     Language The Rio Karma’s menus can be set to display one of five languages in addition to two spelling formats (US and UK English). Press MENU. Select Settings. Select Language.     Orientation The Rio Karma can be made more ergonomic for left handed users. When in Left handed mode, the LCD and con- trols are reversed and the player can be used upside down with the RioStick on the left rather than the right.

    Audible Prompts The player can be set to confirm button presses with an audible prompt. Press MENU. Select Settings. Select Audible Prompts. Select On or Off and a Prompt volume setting. Using Rio Taxi you can copy files to your Rio player, store them on the player as long as you want, and transfer them to any computer on which Rio Taxi has been installed.

    Stopwatch Use the stopwatch to keep track of time sensitive events while listening to digital audio. Press MENU. Select Features. Select Stopwatch. Lap statistics are displayed at the bottom of the Stopwatch screen. When a new lap is set, the difference, either faster (-) or slower (+) between new lap times and the average laptime is displayed for a few moments.
